Generic Congressional Ballot Remains a Tie This Week (Donkeys & Elephants tied at 39%)

For the second straight week, Democrats and Republicans are tied on the Generic Congressional Ballot.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 39% would vote for their district’s Democratic candidate while 39% would choose the Republican.

Last week, the parties were tied at 38%, representing the lowest level of support for Democrats to date.

The GOP took its first small lead in recent years in mid-March, but that didn’t last and the Democrats pulled slightly ahead for several weeks before last week’s tie. It’s important to note that Republicans have not been gaining support. Rather, Democrats have been losing ground. Democrats began the year holding a six- or seven-point lead over the GOP for the first several weeks of 2009. Over the past year, Democratic support has ranged from a low of 38% to a high of 50%.

In that same time period, Republicans have been preferred by 34% to 41% of voters nationwide.

Men now favor the GOP by a 43% to 33% margin, up from an eight-point spread last week. Women prefer the Democrats by a 44% to 35% margin, a slight increase from a week ago.

Looking back, 59% of voters nationwide believe the federal bailouts for banks and other financial institutions were a bad idea, but the political class disagrees.

Other data released yesterday shows 52% of voters worry the government will do too much to fix the struggling economy.

Just watch the southern Midwestern Dems squirm when those points are raised

Many worry that government will control too much of people’s lives, but let’s vote for them anyways. Gerr! Political correctness, political ignorance, and political stupidity are destroying everything related to capitalism and the free market with no end in sight! And all worldwide non-leftists are also stuck in a profoundly leftist world with no end in sight.

Dems can only run against Bush for so long and when that time comes, many blue-dogs will realize that their only alternatives to disassociate themselves with a party that is sinking in favorability or embrace issues that do not sit well with a right of center constituency. I also think this torture memo/prosecution flap has the potential to blow up in the Dems face (no pun intended).

Where did this political class come from? Is it code for the editorial staff?

Wherever they came from, we need to get rid of them...

It’s a subgroup of the respondents. The participants in the poll are classified as political class or not based on answers to a couple of questions.

For example in one question they are asked to agree or disagree with a statement like “Government does a better job of solving people’s problems.” Agreement with that is one sign of being a member of the political class.
