WASHINGTON – As national security adviser in the Bush White House, Condoleezza Rice verbally OK'd the CIA's request to subject alleged al-Qaida terrorist Abu Zubaydah to waterboarding in July 2002, a decision memorialized a few days later in a secret memo that the Obama administration declassified last week.
Rice's role was detailed in a narrative released Wednesday by the Senate Intelligence Committee. It provides the most detailed timeline yet for how the CIA's harsh interrogation program was conceived and approved at the highest levels in the Bush White House.
The new timeline shows that Rice played a greater role than she admitted last fall in written testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee.
The narrative also shows that dissenting legal views about the severe interrogation methods were brushed aside repeatedly.

The guy really is living up to the most negative expectations of him, in so many ways.
I regard the media selection of him from nowhere, and their protection of him, and all that has happened since he took office, as a stealth coup.
He's trying to bump his slumping numbers amongst his base. What better way than to toss a bone to the radical base. I'll bet the DU has stopped bad-mouthing him and is singing his praises. Problem is that they'll go to bed (around noon) and wake up (around 11pm) wanting to know what he's gonna do for them right now.
