Homeland Security chief seeks to repeal Real ID Act

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A post-9/11 law that sets federal standards for state driver's licenses and identification cards is under fire from the head of the agency enforcing that law, the Department of Homeland Security.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano this week said she is working with governors to repeal the Real ID Act, which was passed in 2005 and went into effect last year.

The bill is popular in Washington, but is scorned by many governors who bear the responsibility and cost of validating that holders of driver's licenses are citizens or legal residents of the United States.

Nepolitano is a friggin idiot, but she has the job and a responsible person doesn’t as is the case with most of this administrations’ appointments. My son-in-law is a flying liberal and he loves these past 100 days, but can’t give a legitimate example of why

Didn’t some here oppose this act? I don’t like Nappy, but she may be doing the right thing (if for the wrong reason)

Frankly she is wrong (in her motives) while, I agree with some of the governors who oppose “real ID” - it is a back-door to a federal national ID card system.

At the same time there is nothing wrong with, and nothing stopping, states from instituting, for their own state drivers licenses, the same citizen and/or legal resident checks that “real Id” required.

Not that your son in law is necessarily one, but most liberals like to be fed at the public trough. The learning institutions have done their jobs well while the parents slept.

I oppose any national ID. It's not Constitutional. That's the state's business. More 10th Amendment harassment from DC.

“My son-in-law is a flying liberal...”

You have my sympathy. Do you know anybody with a backhoe and wooded property?

I have lost friends over this, I flat refuse to share airspace with them. Fortunately my entire family are conservatives..... well, they could just be shining me on to stay alive. ;>)

Most Libs don’t think the terrorists have the means to hit us again so it’s fine to weaken security.

DHS/Napolitano's Comments Line: 202-282-8495

EVERYONE here should leave her at least one loving message, don't you think? I always conclude my commentary (demanding her resignation) by inviting her to send the FBI to my home because I'm an extremist from a military family who believes in life and the rule of law.

“it is a back-door to a federal national ID card system.”

You mean, like a Social Security Card?

“You mean, like a Social Security Card?”

When was the last time the police asked you for your social security card at a traffic ticket stop? And when was the last time you had to show your social security card to get your airline boarding pass? And when was a social security card ALL you needed to get a passport, bank account, credit card, visa, etc., etc? When? Never.

Apples and oranges.
