U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva, a Democrat who represents Tucson and far western Phoenix suburbs, has introduced legislation to halt construction of border walls in southern Arizona.
Grijalva said more protections are needed for environmentally sensitive sites near the Arizona-Mexico border, including public lands and Indian reservations.
Grijalva called efforts to build borders walls and fences unrealistic and harmful. There should be more local and tribal control over security and sensitive lands, he said.
Current policy has driven crossing activity to remote isolated areas along the border, which in southern Arizona represent significant public and tribal lands, Grijalva said in a statement. Many of these lands have suffered extensive environmental degradation as a result of unauthorized activity and border security efforts. This bill is the first step in preserving our unique natural heritage while we protect our borders.
Grijalva and other state Democrats, including former Gov. Janet Napolitano (now U.S. Homeland Security Secretary) long have been skeptical of the border walls.
Supporters say they help deter illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
The U.S. government already has built walls and other barriers in the Yuma area, Californias Imperial Valley just across the Colorado River and other sites.
Auto theft is off the charts in AZ. Mexico could and may implode any minute. They are a Top 5 country on the list to potentially go bankrupt and fall apart.
Ping!
Enviornmental issues have nothing to do with his objection to the fence. He doesn't like his constituants having to climb the fence to get into the country so he, Zerobama, and McCain can give them amnesty.
Ol’ Raul is another LaRaza race bigot who for now aligns with big business for cheap labor against America. In the future this traitor will turn against the Chamber of Commerce types and extract way more than the pound of flesh as required by the laws of treachery.
Grijalva? Man, do I feel for ya.
Then again, I’m stuck with Gabby Giffords. I durned near lost my breakfast when I read her latest comment in my morning paper...something about our employer sanctions law is too burdensome on Arizona employers and therefore ought to be scrapped...
Translation: We Mexicans are coming in as fast as we can and we don't want any resistance to our planned takeover.
