The Raahauge's Shooting Sports Fair, a hands-on gun show where you can shoot all the latest firearms on the market, has been cancelled for 2009. The Sports Fair is normally held the first weekend in June each year at Mike Raahauge Shooting Enterprises in Corona. Mike Raahauge said the fair was cancelled because it had become impossible for all the firearm makers to get enough ammunition for this event.
"I just spoke with all of the manufacturers and none of them can get ammo," said Raahauge late last week. "We could hold the fair, but we'd probably be out of ammunition by Friday afternoon."
"Whether the shortage is due to the election of President Barack Obama or the economic downturn or fear of an increase in crime, ammo sales have been like plywood and bottled-water sales before a hurricane in Florida," Raahauge said.
Since President Obama's election, gun and ammunition sales have skyrocketed. Most ammunition manufacturers are operating multiple shifts on their production lines and still can't produce enough ammunition in the major handgun and military-style rifle calibers to meet demand. Besides ammunition, there is also a shortage of semi-automatic handguns, semi-automatic rifles, and reloading components.

“Eight-five percent of gun sales are to first-time buyers.”
WOW!
Our family (dad, two brothers, and uncle and mom) went to a local gun show Saturday. There was ammo to be had by the pallet load if you wanted it. Stuff like 30 carbine was going for $24/50rds as an example and lots of it (made in Montana) - after we all went to Cabela’s and there were hundreds of boxes of .223 at anywhere from $18 to $22 per box. The gun cases had so many people around it that the staff had to use numbers to call customers. It was really packed. We’re out here in Washington. I read where most of the lack of ammo is in the East ....can’t fathom the difference between the West and the East ....
9mm, .40, .45, .380 hard to get in Boise.
GM and Chrysler are missing a bet. Why close their plants? Do this instead:

I went to a gun sow in eastern PA yesterday and the ammo sellers who were usually there were nowhere to be found.
Cabela’s (which usually has everything) is out of many calibers including the popular .380.
We were lucky to get some .380 at the gun show yesterday but bought up all we could find (6 boxes).
Yeah, well can you help a fellow American in NH who is down on his luck and send a thousand Small Rifle primers ... please.
I think it would be easier to find the lost city of El Dorado than small rifle primers!
That’s pretty darn funny! Nice!
Cabela’s is always well stocked. We drop in every couple of weeks or so and buy a few boxes of .223, whether we need it or not.
CHeck the shelves there lately?
They are out of many popular calibers, even though their prices on ammo are much higher.
Westerners have always had it stacked to the ceiling.
Small pistol primers, too! I haven't found either (small rifle or pistol) primers for 10 weeks, and my reloaded plinking ammo supply is getting low...
Brass, bullets, and powder are plentiful - primers are just a dream!
Has anyone heard what the ammo/component makers are doing to aleviate the shortage?
As a diehard car guy, but also a gun lover...NICE WORK! Very funny!
There have been over 7 million NICS firearms background checks done since Nov ‘08 (5 months), which represents an astronomical spike in gun sales.
If we’ve added over 7 million new guns to the streets, where’s the corresponding rise in crime?
I thought we’ve been told that more guns = more crime, blood in the streets, etc.
Save your shells and don't fire 'til you see the whites of their eyes. Good advice then...good advice now!
I was in the Mesquite, NV Wal-Mart yesterday and their shelves for the most part were bare. They had a sign up advising that they are aware of the shortage and that their buyers are doing the best they can. Someone, either staff or a customer, wrote underneath, “Don’t sell all of one type ammo to one customer when it comes in.”
Interesting times.
Just ordered .380 from Cabelas with 4-5 week delivery.
I'd buy that.
Would you REALLY want to buy ammo made by UAW workers?
