LUXEMBOURG - The European Union's health commissioner urged Europeans on Monday to postpone nonessential travel to the United States or Mexico due to swine flu.
EU Health Commissioner Andorra Vassiliou met with the EU foreign ministers on the subject as Spain reported the first confirmed case of swine flu in Europe. That was also the first swine flu case outside North America.

It isn’t in the establishment’s plan to close the border, and while Bush was an open borders guy, he was not alone. It isn’t fair to blame the swine flu on him. Many, if not all, of the cases in the US are from folks who traveled there and brought it back.
Closing the borders long ago would have avoided this potential epidemic.
Swine flu Bush’s fault? You need to go back to DU.
Why has our CDC been asleep?
Umm, wouldn’t have stopped it occuring in Mexico or US visitors from contracting it. And people who have influenza probably aren’t capable of trekking across the border.
This is about to get worse. Just imagine how many kids had spring break in Mexico.......
don't be a dolt.
I don't think that's true. What about the cases in Texas and CA? Were they brought back from border jumpers? Or, do you know for certain they weren't?
You know these early cases may not be the deadly strain killing those in Mexico...close the border for heaven’s sake. I see other countries are taking steps...but no, we must me politically correct which in this case could get us killed.
WASHINGTON, April 26 (Reuters) - The United States is not testing airplane travelers from Mexico for the swine flu virus that has heightened fears of a possible pandemic, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said on Sunday.
“Right now we don’t think the facts warrant more active testing or screening of passengers coming in from Mexico,” she said at a White House briefing.
Oh, for pete’s sake. This has nothing to do with Bush and not much to do with the Mexican border, or at any rate, no more than any travel has to do with borders. The flu seems to have been brought into the US mostly by middle class Americans who had traveled by air to vacation at some of the resorts on the Gulf Coast of Mexico (where it first appeared), and the earliest identified US case involved the child of a DOD employee near San Diego (there are also cases in the Baja tourist areas). The Spanish cases had also vacationed on the Gulf Coast of Mexico.
Can’t we just lay off the Bush bashing for a little while at least?
I shouldn’t make out with college girls any more. ;)
be careful, your BDS is showing.
Interesting...BUT,for anyone wanting a rational comment on the state of this epidemic,I suggest this medical source:
It’s not particularly exciting, and it involves a reasonable amount of reading, but, once you’ve finished, you’ll have something more than empty slogans.
Cozying up to Mexico and turning backs on the flood of the lowest strata of Mexican citizens certainly can be blamed.
I do blame Bush, but I blame past and current politicians who are ruling and ruining our lives and the quality of life in the USA.
LOL. Take allot of Vitamin C, and some D and selenium first. Then kiss.....
I think the CDC is just lazy. Their attitude is “it’s impossible to contain, so why try”. Instead of lets limit this as much as possible and save at least some lives.
Look me up in 60 days and we'll talk about it.
That reminds me of the guy who wanted to gush about Obomba three days after the election. I told him to call me in six months and we'd talk then.
She’s an idiot.
Apparently it will stop the Europeans.
Good advice. It's a pity our government here is the US isn't exercising that basic amount of common sense since any dangerous flu will spread many times faster here than in Europe. Travel to and from Mexico should have at least been significantly restricted until this flu has been studied for another week or so to understand the threat better.
Close the Border - by Federal Order.
DU your foot! Closing our southern border and evicting the illegal ‘back and forths’ would have prevented this outbreak.
I think there have been some on here who come over from DU and try to recruit voters for these third party candidates who don’t stand a snowball’s chance of going anywhere in an election except siphoning votes off the Republican Party. (I agree if the GOP isn’t soon returned to its conservative foundation, voting for ANYONE is soon going to lose any appeal at all for me.)
The relentless, rabid Bush bashing, etc. is all a part of the Democrat/Socialist plan to destroy the Republican Party.
Is this supposed to be a bad thing?
Don’t forget vitamin E...
Umm, yea, let's be "politically incorrect" and keep American citizens who have traveled to Mexico and other places on holiday, out.
[/sarc.]
Hey folks...get a grip....traffic accidents account for 42000 deaths per year....that is 115 per day...
you didn’t answer my question. i love guys who make outlandish claims and then give you the old “talk to me in a few months” line.
You DO realize this came to the U.S. through a businessman traveling to Mexico on business, right? Are you proposing that no one ever be able to cross over into Mexico and come back regardless of the reason?
I have to say the Bush/Obama legacy because Obama is continuing the Bush policy.
Let me get this right. You’re blaming President Bush for the swine flu??? That’s ludicrous.
Go start a thread at DU. The Bush bashers there will be happy to indulge in your lunacy.
Nobody's in charge.
Obama has had a hard time finding someone who is an abortion enthusiast but not a tax cheat.
Me too because only trolls would blame one and not the other. Obama is destroying this country and even some conservatives can’t get over their BDS.
No wonder Obama is so successful at what he does, hypnosis on a mass scale seems to work with the weak minded.
Closing the borders long ago would have avoided this potential epidemic.
It's also a question of how much, or how widespread any dangerous, infectious disease might become in the US. Restricting travel now could definitely limit the number of US communities where this flu will be present until we understand how deadly it might be.
It this should prove to be an unusually deadly flu, those who refused to restrict travel will look like fools, and the blame game will be worse than for Katrina.
No it wouldn’t have.
I hope you were being sarcastic.
We need to get all the non-paying 'boarders' out of the country!
Other countries have quarantined those coming back from Mexico in order to makes sure, they do not carry the deadly form of the virus...if you had ever studied the 1917 pandemic, you would be more concerned.
This is a particularly silly thread.
Do you realize that this particular flu strain has been breeding in Asia for years now, just not yet passing between humans?
Do you realize it has been called “bird flu” as well as “swine flu?” It affects both species.
Do you realize that the “Spanish Flu” of 1918 was a bird flu?
Do you realize that birds are a vector? They spread the virus?
Have you ever tried to close a border to a bird?
The health care community — not just politicians — have been warning us for years that a pandemic is likely. This may be it, it may not.
But blaming open borders is just plain silly.
Difficult to explain that to the open borders loonies on this thread.
Thank you.
Reminds me of a guy who changed his screenname every 30 days. : )
That was then, this is now.
The flu is being spread by border crossings and not only those on foot....planes, cars, trucks.
Close the border now and deal with those that have slipped in.
And don't give me that bird crossing nonsense.
Bush's Fault
Swine flu is Bush's fault--it was just a matter of time.
Thanks for the laugh to start my week. Go tell the kids back from their visits to Cancun that it's Bush's fault.
We need to get all the non-paying ‘boarders’ out of the country!
I haven't visited a site on the internet labeled 'DU' but it seems you have. Tell us about what one would find there.
