Civic Center art project may be killing trees

An art exhibition in Civic Center Plaza could kill trees and should be removed immediately, a certified arborist has warned city officials.

Acclaimed artist Patrick Dougherty in March installed his “The Upper Crust” exhibit, which is 18,000 pounds of freshly cut willow saplings interwoven in the sycamore treetops.

Tree advocates at the time expressed concerns that the exhibit could harm the trees, and a March 31 arborist report seems to validate those worries.

“To protect the trees from possible harm, it is my recommendation that the sculptures be removed from the trees immediately,” certified arborist Roy Leggitt said in a report, after inspecting the trees for the Urban Forestry Council. “Under storm conditions, or even under normal summer conditions when winds are higher, the sculptures will have a wind sail effect that could cause either limb failure or entire tree failure.”

You know....I may be investigated, even arrested for saying the following. From time to time, I go out into the woods with my axe and chop down a few random trees.....just for the fun of it. Oh...and I’m not lying.

Those trees have been heavily pollarded over the years. That’s why they look funny.
I have to laugh at people that think every tree has god-like status. Of course California people are weird anyway. “;^o
Here in NH, we can’t cut the trees fast enough.

How dare you cut down trees in a forest! What’s going to happen to all the nutrients and water the downed trees were going to use? You know only environmentalists know how to control nature! Why, you, you, CONSERVATIONIST, you!

Noting like a 220x140 picture dealing with an "art" work. If I get really close to the screen it looks like those trees have been horribly pruned anyway and it would probably be better to chop them down and plant new ones.

I hate it when idiots in my neighborhood "top" trees rather than having them pruned correctly or just removed and a shorter one planted.

Trees produce CO2
CO2 is an officially verified pollutant according to the EPA.

We need to kill as many trees as humanly possible in order to save the planet. DEATH TO TREES!!!

What a waste of time when one could be interweaving bacon instead...

Needs 1 thick line of sautéed onions & 3 fried eggs down the middle before rolling!

One of the responses complains that the trees were heavily pruned to make them look Parisian, and they’ve been sick ever since.

Actually, nothing wrong with pollarding trees, but you have to do it right. You don’t just take a full, mature tree and cut it way back, you want to start on it when it’s younger.

Not that I really give a care, but that looks more like a picture that was taken around these parts rather than somewhere in Texas. But I ain’t never spent more than an hour or so in Texas so I could be wrong.

So do I. I am a utility forester/arborist. We only do it when forced to by property owners.
