A four-year-old boy may hold the key to a swine flu outbreak that is threatening to become a global pandemic.

Edgar Hernandez Hernandez, from La Gloria in the east Mexican state of Veracruz was diagnosed with swine flu ealier this month.

The village is close to a giant industrial pig farm that locals claim is ground zero for the outbreak.

The youngster's case came as more than 450 members of the community claimed they were suffering respiratory problems and symptoms similar to swine flu.

They claim they are ill from contamination spread by pig waste at nearby breeding farms partly owned by a U.S. company.

Edgar was treated in hospital and is now recovering, but two infants from the area died.

Mexico's Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova told reporters a sample taken from a 4-year-old boy in Mexico's Veracruz state in early April tested positive for swine flu.

However, it is not known when the boy became infected.

One thing that does scare me about this is how NEW the virus appears to be. If it has spread this much in a few weeks, how much can it spread in the next few weeks?

So far we have lots of hyperbole. This isn’t 1918 and people need to relax.

Actually, it is days since it spreads exponentially. CDC pandemic models show almost no cases at day 10 and peaking at millions on day 20. Not saying that is going to happen but if it spreads, it is likely explosive with regards to numbers.

There MUST be a scapegoat 450 members of the community claimed they were suffering respiratory problems and symptoms similar to swine flu. They claim they are ill from contamination spread by pig waste at nearby breeding farms partly owned by a U.S. company.

Well, who do YOU think it will be?

You may be right about the search for a scapegoat, but I don't think Edgar is the target.

They claim they are ill from contamination spread by pig waste at nearby breeding farms partly owned by a U.S. company.

Would this have happened if these Mexicans practiced better personal hygiene? Guess we’ll never know because obviously since it is only co-owned by an American it will be wholly the American nation’s fault.

I think that it needs to be pointed out that Li’l Edgar is living a very green lifestyle.

Yes, people do need to relax. However, this is not to say that there is not a significant possibility of a serious problem with this.

Ah man! What a bummer. I wanted to blame the Mexican kid. A boy with two last names has to be guilty of something. He would go down in history as the boy who started the "Great Swine Flu Epidemic of 2009" ... Now he is just a pawn used by the Evil US Capitalists to eliminate millions of humans from financial balance sheets all in the pursuit of the almighty Dollar. Edgar Hernandez Hernandez - We never really knew you.

Confinement hog farms suck, and that it is Mexico makes me think this hog farm really sucks.

“CDC pandemic models show almost no cases at day 10 and peaking at millions on day 20.”

Is that specific for this event or general numbers?

Do you by chance have a link to that?

This is where I sometimes depart from some opinions at FR. If this pig farm was operating under comparable environmental and hygienic standards as would have required in the US, then the company is not responsible. If the company was using standards significantly more lax than required in the US, then they might bear some responsibility.

Many recognize the threat to US firms if cap and trade and other bogus global warming (climate change) costs are put on firms in the US, but not elsewhere. Same applies to pig farms. Both put firms operating in the US at a cost disadvantage that should not exist.

I, for one, am not freaked out about this flu. Having said that, in the spring of 1918 it was not the flu outbreak that devastated the world. The flu hit in the spring, and then eventually almost died away, but in the Fall and winter of 1918 it came back with a mutated vengeance, that is what I fear!

So although I don't think we have to panic yet, I do think we should all be prepared for what may come 6 months down the road.
