Rush Limbaugh incurs the wrath of hunting rights groups for supporting the Humane Society in PSAs
LA Times ^ | 4/28/09 | staff

When conservative talk-radio icon Rush Limbaugh decided to record a series of public service announcements for the Humane Society of the United States, many animal lovers on both sides of the political aisle applauded.

After all, the topics Limbaugh spoke about in the PSAs, like opposing dogfighting, hardly seemed controversial. "Opposition to cruelty and the embrace of the human-animal bond are universal values," Humane Society president Wayne Pacelle wrote, adding that his group's aims were "in step with those of all good people" regardless of political affiliation.

But a coalition of 28 hunters' rights groups are furious with Limbaugh for aiding and abetting the group that, as U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance president Bud Pidgeon puts it, "is the number one opponent of sportsmen in America today." The groups, which include the Sportsmen's Alliance and Ducks Unlimited, fired off an angry missive to Limbaugh calling on him to sever all ties with the Humane Society.

You mean the media just made up those quotes by the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and Ducks Unlimited?

If these are accurate quotes, the media didn’t spin anything.

Rush made a couple of PSA’s (public service announcements), about dog fighting and such.

The ducks unlimited quacks made the jump from Rush’s support of the HMMSUS to support of all its activities, including the hunting ban which is quite an assumption, in this respect, its just spin on the part of ducks unlimited and a ready and willing MSM.

I see this as an attempt to devalue Rush’s stature and influence among the conservative community.

Although I support the HMSUS efforts in animal cruelty, dog fighting and its adoption services, I strongly disapprove of its efforts to ban hunting, which it will never win anyway because it is up to the states and the voters - this is exactly the same stand Rush has made.

So yes, it is spin.

In NJ the Humane Society filed charges against an old man who killed a rat in his garden because his little granddaughter played in the garden.

Evidently Rush didn’t do his homework on this totally corrupted organization.

Interesting comment about the Humane Society in NJ. Can you elaborate a bit? Whatever happened to the case? Why were charges filed in the first place?

Some Humane Societies are good; some are bad. A lot depends on where you live and who runs it.

This article isn't talking about local shelters that are primarily concerned with animal welfare, it refers to the Humane Society of the United States, an animal rights lobbying group whose policies include outlawing hunting, pushing the US toward veganism, doing away with recreational uses of animals, including circus acts, horseback riding/racing, rodeo, etc.

Read all about it...

The NJ Humane Society is filled with extremists.

The old man went to the local Humane Society office for a trap to catch the rat. It escaped from the trap and the old man returned the trap and told them he had to kill the rat.

The filed charges against him. The story was on Hannity’s radio program for the longest time. Finally, the court case against the old man was dropped. All the publicity from Sean made the difference.

The nutcases here in NJ need to be reined in. No chance of that.

Lindsey and the AP are just trying to stir the alliances of Rush. Don’t fall for it. Rush is on our side and a true conservative. This is Obama’s strategy. To divide and conquer. Do not believe for one instance that Rush is jumping the shark here!

Our local radio station often runs PSAs - I guess because they can’t really sell all the airtime. They are always whiney lefty crap like, “wear your seatbelt”, “exercise is good for you”, etc.

How do these PSAs get on the air? I know they always mention that they are provided by “the ad council”. Could a group of Normal Americans make them and get some decent ones on the air?

Folks, please get informed. This HSUS is NOT the Humane Society we know and love. It's an organization of the usual leftist-type infiltrators and hard-core leaders in the anti-hunting movement. It appears Rush's staff didn't vet this group before he agreed to lend his name by cutting ads for them.

There was a long thread on this yesterday and many knowledgeable freepers revealed this bunch for what it is. I and others posted on it till I was blue in the face....and many posters STILL don't get it. This is not THE Human Society many of us donate to and support. Sheesh.

Its never been a big subject on his show as far as I can tell and I don’t recall him ever talking about his use of a gun.

I don't know if he shoots, but he has in the past been a strong supporter of 2nd amendment. Not as vocal as on other issues, but never a denier

I know he’s on our side. He just stepped in it this time.

Gotta call a spade a spade.

Thanks you for the clarification. I'm not particularly a Hannity fan, so don't listen to or watch him. (I actually don't watch tv at all.)

Anyway, I'm happy that this all ended right, and happy that Hannity could help him.

The poor man was in shock over being charged. He had to incur legal costs but if I remember Hannity helped out.

It was so sad. That kind of abuse is inexcusable, but then NJ is the headquarters for abuse of power, corruption and assorted other offenses against it’s citizens.

I'm always amazed that any normal person actually lives in NJ. However, I have very good friends (tho liberals, mostly) who moved from Dallas to, of all places, Clinton, NJ. I visited them there in the fall several years ago, and I have to admit, Clinton NJ is one of the most beautiful little towns I've seen.

I'm sure it's the big cities that elect the worst of the politicians.

Yes I know that. I never meant to imply that he didn’t support the Second Amendment, sorry about the confusion. I guess I always got the impression that he while he supported our side he never seemed all that interested in them. The guns specifically.
