MEXICO CITY/GENEVA, April 30 (Reuters) - Mexico's president told citizens to stay home from Friday for a five-day partial shutdown of the economy, after the World Health Organisation raised its alert level and said a swine flu pandemic was imminent.

In his first televised address since the crisis erupted last week, President Felipe Calderon told Mexicans to stay home with their families. The country will suspend non-essential work and services, including some government ministries, from May 1-5.

"There is no safer place than your own home to avoid being infected with the flu virus," Calderon said.

What is to prevent a sovereign US STATE from constructing such quarantine blockades north of the border and stopping people? In other words, the Feds who run the border crossings (under Obama) can let people in including sick people, but the Governor of a state could insure that such people go no further into his state from those checkpoints and roadblocks. Which of the four governors has the guts?

Exactly! But I'd put them a few feet inside my state rather than an hour.

- Oscillococinum, a homeopathic remedy, has been vindicated as quite effective in a large clinical trial in Europe, with an H1N1 variant. You can buy this at Hill Country Natural Foods, or the Wimberley Pharmacy.

Wimberley, eh? I love that town! I stop by the Wimberley Pie Company every time I'm in that area!

Thanks so much for the info. Just want to know who we can rightly blame for this if it goes really bad.

I’m thinking Texas’ Governor might have the guts required. He was the one causing all the stir over the 10th Amendment...

Texas Governor good hair Perry doesn't have the guts. He panders to Mexico just like the rest of them. Illegals get in-state college tuition. When push comes to shove, it's just talk.

No, WHO said they had only confirmed 7 deaths. It will take a long time to determine how many people have died from this.

That is of course what I said. I guess because I didn't use the word confirmed then you dispute what I said. The fact is that only 7 deaths so far have tested positive for this flu strain. There may be more coming, but 7 is all they could confirm as of yesterday. Other strains of flu also kill.

I read an article about the 1918 pandemic. It started as a mild flu pandemic in the spring and summer of 1918 but then exploded in ferocity in the fall.

Just because it's mild now doesn't mean it'll stay that way. But if it stays mild all summer that will give us time to get a vaccine manufactured.

This is what is important about that snippet:

On private health care phone calls, they knew that child was close to death and they were notifying medical professionals that this is serious, folks. That child was on their radar BEFORE it died. Now we all know he has in fact died... But they were concerned enough about his case (and the other one mentioned) to alert all medical professionals that they need to take this seriously here in the US.

Additionally, in one of the articles or news alerts in the last two days, there was a stat that said we have LOTS of cases here in the US who are HOSPITALIZED with this already. I’m on a blackberry so I can’t search/find that right now, and I don’t want to misquote the numbers for others to take as fact, but the gist of it was something like 25% or more of our US “confirmed” cases were in the hospital. So that is either an abundance of preventive measures to ensure they don’t die, OR, a huge percentage of the confirmed cases are seriously ill.

AGAIN, don’t quote me on that percentage... I could be mis-remembering.

You should tell him to stay.

The thing with the Flu of 1919 is that it cut down people in the best years of their life, supposedly when they were supposed to be at their toughest. If the age range of related deaths is around twenties tell him that and don’t do that as a hysteric, but as a mother who is concerned and convince him to stay and wait to see what happens.

I read that too and hopefully they can get a vaccine done in time...although, in another pandemic in the late 60’s a bunch of people died from the vaccine..more than died of the virus. Scary times.

Don't know if anyone else has commented on it but FNC just ran a story that even though Mexico has shut down, our border patrol agents are NOT allowed to wear protective masks or gloves at the border!

Only when in close contact with someone they think is sick are they allowed to pull out their masks. After they have finished with that person, they have to put the mask away. This is outrageous, IMO.

Even in the case of a near pandemic disease, we are sooo afraid we might hurt someone's feelings that we put our country at further risk.

I am working on him. Sent him the same letter I posted in #8 to get him thinking at least. He is very head strong and not a mamma’s boy at all...so I have to be sneaky psychologically with him....lol. I haven’t come out and asked him not to go yet...just planting the seeds right now.

Thanks for your concern and advice.

If you swing it to blaming Republicans, you have a potentially great career in the entertainment industry.

In other news, the WHO gets with the program with information we knew THREE DAYS AGO and admits 154 people have the flu.......

Those idiots couldn’t find their butt with their face.

Frankly, I will listen to the state officials for the real numbers and any Freeper that pooh-poohed this based on the WHO doing so the other day has real egg on their face now...

I'm astounded! Congressman Brian Billbray is trying to bring it (no protective gear for the Border agents) to the forefront. He is calling and writing both the WH and Napolitano's office.

Have they seen how many people cross over the border each day???

Oscillococinum, a homeopathic remedy, has been vindicated as quite effective

We've had great success with this simple remedy. It is available at our local Wal-Mart.

It would be a good idea to stock up. Start taking it at the very first sign of flu-like illness.

Last I checked, there were 150 deaths in Mexico alone.

In a country of 111 million people. In the US, in an average flu season, 36,000 people die from flu. This seems like a lot until you realize that with over 300 million in the US, millions die every year from something or other.
