Michelle Obama has taken casual to a haute new level.
While volunteering Wednesday at a D.C. food bank, the First Lady sported her usual J.Crew cardigan, a pair of utilitarian capri pants and, on her feet, a sneaky splurge: trainers that go for $540.
That's right: These sneakers - suede, with grosgrain ribbon laces and metallic pink toe caps - are made by French design house Lanvin, one of fashion's hottest labels. They come in denim and satin versions, and have been a brisk seller all spring.
They're out of stock at posh Meatpacking District boutique Jeffrey, and Barneys New York boasts a limited selection of the sneaks, which are a cult favorite among fashionistas.

Other celebrity fans of Lanvin's costly kicks include Ellen DeGeneres and Kanye West, who has blogged about his faves.
As the family's primary dog walker, Michelle clearly requires comfortable footwear.
"I got up at 5:15 in the morning to walk my puppy," she joked Thursday. "That's how my day starts. Even though the kids are supposed to do a lot of the work, I'm still up at 5:15 a.m. taking my dog out."
She'll be trodding on New York's sidewalks Tuesday for the first time as First Lady. Michelle will meet with staff at the U.S. mission to the United Nations. Later, she headlines Time magazine's "100 most influential people" gala.

The problem is, if you want to explain to others who and what he/Obama is, and you get basic things like that wrong, and these people know it's wrong, they'll doubt anything else you try to tell them. There's no better weapon than straight facts.

Agree - as O.J. said of the shoes he claimed he did NOT wear on the night of Nicole’s murder, “I would not wear those ugly a** shoes!!!” The ugly a** shoes were very expensive designer loafers.
Re Michelle, did she actually purchase those shoes herself, or did the house of Lanvin give her a gift? Could she even accept such a gift, legally? Or did someone else give her the shoes??? Maybe Ted Kennedy gave her the shoes knowing she would be the dog’s primary caregiver and needed comfy shoes, at least when staffers were not assigned that ‘walking’ duty she now claims is hers.
But yes, those are UGLY shoes!

Wearing those expensive designer ‘sneakers’ to serve meals at a food bank is a real faux pas for a ‘First Lady.’ Owning the shoes is not so much the problem as is the inappropriateness of showing them off at a food bank.
If the masses did not have any way of knowing these are ultra expensive designer sneakers it would not matter a bit, really.
I like designer accessories, too, but would think twice before wearing expensive items to assist at a food bank.

Oh that’s right — I remember the photos now — what a circus that was and here in L.A. it was especially insane.
Now I remember the designer’s name: Bruno Magli!!!
These are French sneakers and a gift from Sarkozy and Carla Bruni (my guess)

We had a genuinely elegant, truly beautiful, intelligent and kind First Lady for eight years—Laura Bush. The media scum couldn’t stand the fact there was nothing to drum up against her.
Now they’re trying to pretend Michele is a demure and classy beauty/fashion icon. LOL
I only wear my cheap shoes when I’m worried about stepping in doggie do-do.
She’s riding high on things from country that she’s so ashamed of.

You could buy 300 pairs of those ugly French Sneakers for the $150,000 that was spent on Governor Palin. And let us not forget that many of those clothes were never worn and were returned.
300 pairs of sneakers could just about take care of the Obama Entourage.
I think it shows a lack of common sense and a total disregard for how she is perceived by the “people”. This couple is disgusting.
She is the worst-dressed first lady (I refuse to capitalize) that I can remember. She is just weird.
