First Lady Michelle Obama steps out in Lanvin sneakers and they're only $540!

Michelle Obama has taken casual to a haute new level.

While volunteering Wednesday at a D.C. food bank, the First Lady sported her usual J.Crew cardigan, a pair of utilitarian capri pants and, on her feet, a sneaky splurge: trainers that go for $540.

That's right: These sneakers - suede, with grosgrain ribbon laces and metallic pink toe caps - are made by French design house Lanvin, one of fashion's hottest labels. They come in denim and satin versions, and have been a brisk seller all spring.

They're out of stock at posh Meatpacking District boutique Jeffrey, and Barneys New York boasts a limited selection of the sneaks, which are a cult favorite among fashionistas.

Other celebrity fans of Lanvin's costly kicks include Ellen DeGeneres and Kanye West, who has blogged about his faves.

As the family's primary dog walker, Michelle clearly requires comfortable footwear.

"I got up at 5:15 in the morning to walk my puppy," she joked Thursday. "That's how my day starts. Even though the kids are supposed to do a lot of the work, I'm still up at 5:15 a.m. taking my dog out."

She'll be trodding on New York's sidewalks Tuesday for the first time as First Lady. Michelle will meet with staff at the U.S. mission to the United Nations. Later, she headlines Time magazine's "100 most influential people" gala.

"Let them eat cake!"

Anyone talked to Madam du Farge lately? I wonder how she's coming along with that scarf.

This is good fun to me. Down with the evil shoes! I love it. This is like a comedy sketch. Maybe we can organise a march or something...

Now you're getting it!

That's the spirit !

PS-- You're trying to change the argument in mid-stream. I was talking about the typical liberal hypocrisy, of saying one thing, and doing something completely different.

While many politicians stretch the truth from time to time, some are clearly worse than others.

The Bush twins never used the bully pulpit to berate Americans by telling what they should be doing with their lives, while they lived another way, behind their family.

Finally, I don't consider you to be "evil incarnate," nor do I expect you to succumb to any peer pressure, but I would appreciate if you remained consistent in your posts. You started off claiming Freepers were jealous and envious because of Mrs. Obama's shoes; I pointed out that it wasn't the shoes...that it was the hypocrisy. Then, you switched to your "all politicians are evil" rant. Sorry, but you lose credibility in my book, for what it's worth.

Why should I remain consistent on such an inane/stupid topic?

I've made it very clear that I regard this whole thing as a stupid waste of time. I refuse to take it seriously at all. I don't care which shoes the First Lady wears. I just don't see it as an issue worth all the bother.

But it is really fun to try to wind people up when you see that they're all worked up over something. I like poking at people. I mean, for me, this was good fun. It was good for a laugh.

Hypocrisy is a dime a dozen. I never met anyone who wasn't a hypocrite at some point or another- including myself. It is so common it is like the air we breathe.

I am not seeking credibility. What you or anyone else here thinks of me is irrelevent to me. Well, ok, maybe not irrelevent- but pretty darn close.

To me, this was merely an exercise in sh1t-stirring. Nothing more. It's just amusing to see people get worked up over the shoes.
