Three relatives have been charged in connection with an embezzlement scheme at George Mason University, and investigators say they stole as much as $200,000.
University police say Jose Rosado, a supervisor with Campus Living Villages-- a company that manages the dorms at GMU-- hired as many as five ghost employees. All of them were members of his extended family. ...
According to Jim Short, president of Campus Living Villages, Jose Rosado was a supervisor who had been working for the company since 1998....
Explaining how the scheme worked, Short said some employees who don't have bank accounts choose to get their pay by way of debit cards. By manipulating time sheets, Short says the debit cards went to Jose Rosado.
When the scheme was uncovered, Rosado was arrested, charged with embezzlement and jailed. That's when the investigation began to expand, including Rosado's mother, Beatrice, and his wife, Yesenia Argueta.
By listening to his phone conversations from the jail, police concluded the two were also involved, according to a search warrant affidavit.
The affidavit says Mr Rosado told his wife, "'Forgive me for everything I have made happen...Did you take out the money I told you to?'" Mrs. Argueta answers, "Yes."
The warrant says Beatrice Rosado was overheard telling her son, "Don't say anything over the phone."
Two days later, herself locked up, the affidavit says Beatrice Rosado told her roommate, "I lied to the police . In the house by the plants there are two bar stools, make them disappear, and the kids beds upstairs, cover them in plastic."
Police believe those odd directions may be code for hiding or transferring money, said Ginovsky.
