I never really thought about it before but I half suspect that the Spanish behavior in the New World was in some ways due to the Muslim occupation. That is the forced conversion of the indigenous people to the Catholic faith, the destruction of Aztec temples and books.

The other European invaders were much less interested in converting the Indians and more interested and economic exploitation. The French, British and Dutch crowns were quite happy to let the Indians be heathen and left conversion to the churches. The Spanish made it a state affair.
