195 U.S. Catholic dioceses - each one headed by only one bishop who is fully responsible for that flock and who answers personally to the pope.
All other bishops are either emeritus (retired), auxiliary (assistants), or co-adjutors (named as the permanent future replacement to the reigning bishop - usually appointed only when the reigning bishop’s ability to do the job is doubtful).
