Reporting from Washington and Los Angeles -- President Obama will ask Congress for $27 billion for border and transportation security in the next budget year, fulfilling a promise to the Mexican government to battle the southbound flow of illegal weapons and setting the stage for immigration reform by first addressing enforcement, administration officials said Tuesday.
The spending, an 8% increase over this year's, will enable the administration to hire more agents and enhance security at air- and seaports. Obama also will request more money to expand screening for illegal immigrants in jail and to improve a Web-based program for verifying workers' employment eligibility.
The funding requests are part of the 2010 budget Obama plans to present to Congress on Thursday. Legislators last week passed a $3.5-trillion budget blueprint that tracks Obama's major policy goals, including a healthcare overhaul and a push for renewable energy sources.
The border and immigration budget underscores differences with the Bush administration, which emphasized border fence construction, increased detention space and more teams to raid work sites. Obama has already changed the game on work-site enforcement, giving immigration agents new guidelines that shift the emphasis from illegal workers to employers who break the law by hiring them.

"If the American people don't feel like you can secure the borders," Obama said during a prime-time news conference last week, "then it's hard to strike a deal that would get people out of the shadows and on a pathway to citizenship who are already here, because the attitude of the average American is going to be, 'Well, you're just going to have hundreds of thousands of more coming in each year.' The article begins by saying the funds are to keep weapons from flowing south. Then it ends up saying securing the border from incoming Mexicans is necessary to secure support for amnesty.
Yep. Smoke and mirrors and a positive headline from his friends in the MSM is all it takes to hoodwink the masses these days.
They only read headlines, if they read at all.
2010 midterm rhetoric put out there early so the FOIIC (friends of illegals in congress) can oppose this rhetoric and gobble up every legal and illegal “hispanic” vote....this crap is more likely to “restrict” illegals heading south more than north.....the dope must get through, though, no matter what.
Only security in this country is for Zero and the White House and Congress Elitists. The rest of us are on our own. In fact, they’re sending the Gitmo terrorists to live among us as well as Hamas, ACORN thugs, and, more than likely, prisoners let out because of overcrowding. Couple that with wanting to disarm the American people. Sound like a plan to you?? Not to me.

$27B would also cover a concrete wall (at $800/LF) all along the boarder with gaurds stationed every 1/2 Mile and all the bells and wistles for many years.
Wouldn’t that do more for Obamas agenda to keep all those nasty guns in America?
Of course, that would also have a side affect of limiting the next generation of democratic voters access to America.
This money will secure MEXICO from whatever may be going over the border. They are not increasing anything to secure the USA.
...we have a new ‘border czar’....and according to the article, not one new thing for border control....we are sending agents to the border to protect Mexico from our guns getting in, because Mexico won’t put any guards to keep them out. Mexico had a ‘border czar’, but he was being paid by the cartels.

My theory: if all things (geography, economy, rate of illegal immigration, coasts associated with illegal immigration, etc.) were exactly the same, but Mexico was populated totally by white, Christian, married couples and their children, the border would have been sealed decades ago and we wouldn’t be having this discussion.
