I often (well, maybe not often..) wonder about that.

Beliefs aren't easily changed. I find myself inclined to believe that he went to his grave thinking he made all the right moves and that would be remembered that way.

As far as I know he never wrote anything that really examined the issue. I'd love to know more about his correspondence through the war years until his death.
