President Barack Obama has accepted the resignation of an official who authorized the presidential aircraft flyover in lower Manhattan last month, CBS 2 has learned.

Louis Caldera, the director of the White House Military Office, handed in his resignation Friday. The news comes as Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the Air Force flyover that sparked a panic was not adequately reviewed and approved by senior service and department officials.

The flyover was arranged as part of a photo opportunity for White House records. The official photo was released along with Caldera's resignation and the official report on the flyover.

For those interested, here's one of the photos they will not release:

I call this a fake!

The position of Lady Liberty and the aircraft's shadows would mean the sun would be coming from the North or slightly NNE. The sun in NYC rises over Long Island, not CT.

And the sun is shining on the aircraft but not the ground.

Who took the photo? I heard a report that said the accompanying aircraft (F-16?) were one-seaters, not the typical pilot/gunner escorts.

Fighters use wing pods (attached to a missile hardpoint) to take photos.

That was my first thought: The plane looks like a big bird that’s about to poop on Lady Liberty.

I’m guessing with a little work and review of the video, one would find that at no time on the date in question were the chase plane, AF1, and the ferry in the same alignment as depicted in the photo.

I think that Rahm Emanuel is too serious for this type of photo-op stuff. I think that this is more the style of David Plouffe, the campaign manager. They did say that the picture was meant as a campaign photo.

With the release of this photo, I’m now convinced that the entire story is as phoney as BHO.

I’m getting something about the symbolism of the office of the President overshadowing liberty.

Funny... That's exactly the thought I had as well.

This was taken from the cockpit, not a wingpod. The hue and saturation of colors are totally off due to the canopy tinting, plus you can see the edge of the cockpit and the reflection off the inside of the canopy.

WHO WAS ON THE PLANE?

If you were a passenger on that plane you probably could cash in right now? Wonder who will be selling their story to National Enquirer?

Reflections and the lower portion of the cockpit canopy in the frame. Your right the F-16 pilot just grabbed is digital camera & took a snapshot. First class all the way.

No wonder they wanted this classified. I CANNOT believe they did all this just for the F-16 pilot to take a snapshot through the canopy.

Fox News guy was incorrect.

The planes that serve the executive use call signs special air mission 2800 and special air mission 2900 when not carrying POTUS or VPOTUS.

Whatever aircraft the President is on is referred to as (service - one): for example when on board a USMC aircraft of any type that aircraft changes call signs to “Marine One” - most commonly of course for the helicopter used to transport him from the WH to the AFB.

When President Bush famously landed on the CVN he did so on board “Navy One”.

Similarly, aircraft carrying the Veep re-designate to (service - two).

I was thinking the same thing, but I don’t know the geography there or the time of day the picture was taken.

Anyone with even moderate Photoshop skills could have produced a better result at far less cost.

They’d be crazy to fake this....but since it looks like a cell phone pic thru the canopy of the chase plane we all know this wasn’t a professional photo-op mission.
