Cheney to GOP: Don't Go Changin'

Former Vice-President Dick Cheney told a North Dakota radio audience this week that in his opinion it would be a mistake for the struggling Republican Party to change in any fundamental way, according to a report in Politico.

“I think it would be a mistake for us to moderate,” Cheney said. “This is about fundamental beliefs and values and ideas … what the role of government should be in our society, and our commitment to the Constitution and constitutional principles.

“You know, when you add all those things up, the idea that we ought to moderate basically means we ought to fundamentally change our philosophy. I for one am not prepared to do that, and I think most of us aren’t,” he added.

“Most Republicans have a pretty good idea of values, and aren’t eager to have someone come along and say, ‘Well, the only way you can win is if you start to act more like a Democrat,’” Cheney concluded.

Cheney covered a host of other subjects during the interview by host Scott Hennen, where he was for the most part defensive of the Bush administration and skeptical of some of the emerging policies of the administration of President Barack Obama.

"Its a shame he will not run for President."

Its a bigger shame that he wasn't the actual President, the past eight years.

Yes he was one of the directors. I’ve never been convinced of the conspiracy theories involving the CFR. There is a lot of dot connecting from the Alex Jones crowd and the Michael Moore crowd. It seems that both conservatives and leftists have found things to despise about the CFR. I don’t agree with many of the things that CFR is trying to accomplish but even Reagan who had been a critic of the Trilateral Commission and the CFR ended up nominating Bush to be his VP and filling his cabinet with CFR members. I can’t waste my time being mad at shadowy organizations. We have enough credible targets in plain sight without fighting imaginary bogeymen like the CFR.

It’s easy to lay blame at blank slates.(the unknown) Because then it can be whatever you want it to be.

Known quantities are just that. Not very moldable.

Bush was much more “moderate” than I can stand. Lets get back to true conservative, aka “classical liberal” objectives. Enough of this leftist b.s. Our Constitution doesn’t allow most of what the federal government now stand for.

Cheney could run, IF IF IF we let him know we want him to.

His heart problem seems to be under control, at least for things like running the USA although maybe not running a marathon.

Dick Cheney is a strong conservative, a patriot and definately not afraid of democrats or speaking his mind! Very remindful of our Founding Fathers!

I don’t think so. I saw the Hannity interview. He was breathing heavily just sitting in a chair. Running this country is worst than running a marathon.

Or what they are doing.

Cheney is a not a loud talker. My take on the Hannity interview is that due to his not loud voice the studio microphone was turned way up, which made his breathing sound louder as well.

Physically, running the country and running a marathon are vastly different. Politically Cheney has the heart of a lion.

I do not doubt his courage. But take a look at pictures of George Bush at the beginning and the end of his presidency and let me know if you still do not think that the job does takes a physical toll.

Yes, exactly like that. But instead of attaching cheery things people are attaching their own personal conspiracy theories.

Uh Mr. Cheney... with all due respect... the GOP is really no different that the Democratic party RIGHT NOW when it comes to creating big government and spending taxpayers money.

We really do need to change... move the GOP toward the party of Ronald Reagan...

Maybe this is his way of saying just that.
