It is an honor to be disliked or even hated by some people. One of the nice things about being an adult, I tell my children, is that to some extent, you get to choose who will dislike you. The mock-humor/personal attack at the dinner makes Rush stand out in contrast more clearly as a good and decent man even to people who are not inclined to be dittoheads.
