Amnesty Again
American Spectator ^ | May 11, 2009 | W. James Antle, III

Posted on 05/11/2009 6:45:45 AM PDT by reaganaut1

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Barack Obama and his immigration-policy team are ready to give amnesty another chance.

This month, President Obama begins his push for "comprehensive immigration reform," an effort at which both his predecessor and his 2008 general election opponent failed repeatedly. Despite the support of liberals like Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), George W. Bush and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) both saw their efforts founder on the questions of border security and what to do with the 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants already in the United States.

Try as they might, neither Bush nor McCain were ever able to convince the American people that they were willing to do what it takes to secure the country's porous borders. Whenever Bush or McCain said "immigration reform," the voters heard "amnesty now, enforcement never." Much as happened when the first major bipartisan amnesty, the Immigration Reform and Control Act, was passed in 1986.

For this reason, Obama has tread carefully. Although Democrats control both sides of Pennsylvania Avenue and the enforcement-first Republicans who defeated two Bush-era immigration bills have been reduced to an ineffectual rump, the immigration issue is fraught with political peril -- especially for Democrats representing historically Republican congressional districts, many of whom were recruited by White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel himself in his past role as Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman.

Emanuel's skepticism about the political appeal of the Bush-McCain-Kennedy approach to illegal immigration was thought to relegate the issue to the backburner until Obama is safely re-elected. But in April, the Wall Street Journal reported that Emanuel had emerged as an "unexpected ally" of comprehensive reformers and a "backer of immigration action."

Without secure borders “immigration reform” is still a joke, and a bad one at that.

Oh yeah. Lottsa luck amigos.

With unemployment skyrocketing, I've read its 25% in some areas, Americans will really go for this. Why I can see them now -- American BORN Citizens lining up in droves, volunteering to give up their scarce job to some illegal whose clothes are still wet from crossing the Rio Grande. And in a couple weeks will be an American CITIZEN too - and all he had to do was break a few laws, like steal some American's identity.

Yep this is real winner for the Open Border Amnesty crowd.

With Regan’s Amnesty, they told us they would secure the border. It does not work. There is no willingness.

“Comprehensive Immigration Reform” has been a wet dream of the (largely left wing) political class because more than almost any other single move, putting 20 million non-english speaking largely illiterate, uneducated, “immigrants” on the voter rolls would insure a needy hands-out population of thralls voting for more and more programs, and further dividing and conquering the electorate.

Now that the government controls financial services and automakers (and after the next engineered crisis can own whatever industry is targeted) risking the blowback of an economically shellshocked working class doesn't have the same risk/reward calculus. They don't need to push this politically because we have already been conquered for the most part.

The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials said the number of Latinos who became Americans in fiscal year 2008 more than doubled over the previous year, to 461,317. That’s nearly half of the record 1,046,539 new citizens overall in 2008, a 58 percent increase from 2007. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gQKI-mUtzRTYIm7MjslLxEoz2zVgD97DFPI01

Study: Illegal Immigrants Having More Kids In US Associated Press ^ | April 14, 2009
http://www.thedenverchannel.com/money/19175382/detail.html

Growing numbers of children of illegal immigrants are being born in this country, and they are nearly twice as likely to live in poverty than those with American-born parents...

Overall, illegal immigrants’ children account for one of every 15 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. In 2008, California had the most illegal immigrants at 2.7 million, double its 1990 number, followed by Texas, Florida, New York and New Jersey.

“In the next eight years, the violent collection of criminal drug cartels could overwhelm the state and establish de facto control over broad regions of northern Mexico,” McCaffrey’s report said. “A failure by the Mexican political system to curtail lawlessness and violence could result in a surge of millions of refugees crossing the U.S. border.”

That's true but the joke will be on all the amnesty-supporting democrats. How ironic it would be to see the likes of the Kennedys and Harry Reids voted out and replaced by the very same people they pushed amnesty for because that's exactly what will happen.

This is a NIGHTMARE, and I consider both legal and illegal immigration to be a problem presently.

Thank you for all the information in your post and as well, for all your work and sacrifice on this issue over many years, Aunt Bea!

Thomas Sowell noted the problem with legals as well, in one of his columns. They are a problem beause many of them qualify for government programs and health care (and take advantage of them some never becoming able to suport themselves) on the taxpayer dime, some of them being quite elderly and thus also will NEVER be contributing to the economy.

Perhaps, Thomas Sowell is a racist too. /sarc
