Former Catholic head of Milwaukee admits he's gay

NEW YORK (AP) — A Roman Catholic archbishop who resigned in 2002 over a sex and financial scandal involving a man has written a memoir that describes how he struggled with being gay.

Archbishop Rembert Weakland, former head of the Milwaukee archdiocese, "is up front about his homosexuality in a church that preferred to ignore gays," Publisher's Weekly wrote in a review Monday.

The book, "A Pilgrim in a Pilgrim Church: Memoirs of a Catholic Archbishop," is set to be released in June and is described by the publisher as a self-examination by Weakland of his "psychological, spiritual and sexual growth."

The Vatican says that men with "deep-seated" attraction to other men should not be ordained.

Weakland stepped down quickly after Paul Marcoux, a former Marquette University theology student, revealed in May 2002 that he was paid $450,000 to settle a sexual assault claim he made against the archbishop more than two decades earlier. The money came from the archdiocese.

Marcoux went public at the height of anger over the clergy sex abuse crisis, when Catholics and others were demanding that dioceses reveal the extent of molestation by clergy and how much had been confidentially spent to settle claims.

Weakland denied ever assaulting anyone. He apologized for concealing the payment.

In an August 1980 letter that was obtained by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Weakland said he was in emotional turmoil over Marcoux and signed the letter, "I love you."

Any hint of homo tendencies in potential priest candidates should immediately disqualify them.

A queer fool like this one wouldn't make it past the first month in minor seminary in my current North Dakota Diocese.

Putting a man with homosexual inclinations into a seminary (or the philosophy department at the University of Walamaloo) is like putting a normal guy in a camp full of high school girls.

Twenty years ago I knew a guy who was in the seminary but quit,he said, mainly because fellow seminarians were hitting on him all the time.I thought he was joking...or delusional. Now I know he wasn't.

And what makes you think that Weakland would even want to get married?

That would not solve the problem, which was caused by homosexual and homosexual-sympathizing bishops admitting homosexuals to seminary. Marrying a woman is the farthest thing from their minds.

While some of these guys may well have entered the priesthood thinking it would "cure" their tendencies, most of them joined for the same reason Willie Sutton robbed banks.

So, your premise is that if a man does not or can not marry, he becomes a homosexual, maybe even a pedophile.

Care to defend that?

Same thing happened to a friend of mine. Have you read Goodbye, Good Men?

The problem was mostly the awful liberal bishops appointed at the recommendation of Archbishop Jadot. Far too many of the liberal, heterodox bishops were homosexual sympathizers or homosexual themselves.

My point is that if priests were allowed to be married there'd be more than enough normal applicants and the pervs would be shut out.

He can pray for himself. Hopefully the Archdiocese has a real man for an Archbishop now.

There; fixed it.

Weakland was a virulent abortionist as well as homosexual. Why do they seem to go together?

He’s not gay, he’s queer. I refuse to allow them to subvert this word again in my presence!

Up front?!?! He's lied about it for decades, how does that qualify as up front?

As Rush asked rhetorically today: If a liberal lies and no one reports it as such, is it really a lie?

I guess if you're a homosexual priest and pro-abortion(the saving grace of the new American religion), why, lieing abut it for decades is being "up front" in a queer back-assward sort of way.

Nope, the pervs would NOT be shut out by allowing marriage, the pervs are shut out by following the rules.

The problem was caused by allowing homosexual bishops like Weakland to be in charge of selecting the candidates for ordination. They more or less ran their seminaries as Club Meds for homosexuals. They actively discouraged straight applicants, using homosexual-sympathizing psychiatrists to weed out normal men as "too judgmental" or not "sympathetic enough".

And instead of sacrificing the potential for a wife and family as a sacred discipline, as seminarians are supposed to do, these homosexuals were giving up nothing, but instead indulging their lusts. The exact opposite of what priestly celibacy means.

In conservative, traditional, orthodox dioceses (like ours) the seminaries are full and the Director of Vocations just had to hire a full-time assistant. Young men with a true call understand completely what they are giving up, and why, and I honor them for that.

The problem isn’t that priests can marry, it’s that there are too many fags in positions of power in the Church that it discourages people from entering the priesthood. Get rid of the fags, and you will see more worthy individuals entering the priesthood.

That should be, “The problem isn’t that priests can’t marry....”

...the pervs are shut out by following the rules.

True enough. But the problem with that is that, today, without the pervs there'd be no applicants at all.Men who are allowed to marry would,I'll wager, apply in substantial numbers.Married priests are our only hope of having *any* non-perv priests in 10 years or so.

Absolutely right, but the media has gone to extreme measures to cloak the abuse scandal in pedophilia rather than blaming old fashioned homosexuals running a muck with the choirboys. They all know it but we live in a world of propaganda, not reality, and nothing negative comes out about the protected class.
