If you only step down a gauge they are OK at shorter ranges.
12 to 20, 20 to 28... but to drop from 12 to .410, you’ll have a pretty blown pattern.
Actually a gauge down from 12 is 16, but of course I am being a jerk, since 16s aren’t made any more and I would bet the ammo is hard to come by.
