US President Barack Obama has changed his mind and will now attempt to block the publication of photographs showing the abuse of prisoners by US soldiers.
The US government had previously said it would not fight a court ruling ordering the release of the pictures.
Mr Obama now believes the release of the photos would make the job of US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan more difficult, White House officials said.
The pictures were due to be released by 28 May, according to the court ruling.

For me, you torture when you have to, but the fact is that our policies regarding capture and treatment of war prisoners was pretty good, and most definitely defendable.
What I’d welcome is moving away from moralizing about the US’s position without first analyzing the policies of our enemies.
I don’t think it would take much to drive us to full-blown war against Islam world wide. If the MSM devoted as much time exposing Islam’s every wart as they did Palin, we’d have our war.
Islam has been, and always will be, a worldwide issue as long as they are unwilling to police their own on Islamic fundamentalist fascism. Islam crops up about every 650 to 750 years, and each time we lack the resolve to deal with it.
I think my campaign would begin with moral equivalency: If Islam is a religion of peace, then let’s adopt their policies:
1. OK to physically abuse your wife.
2. OK for your male children to abuse their mother.
3. Not OK for women to be in public without a man.
4. Show the ceremony where kids get their heads cut and bleed all over the place in a big parade.
5. Show America that the proper place for the Islamic female is at home, cleaning house, and pumping out more jihadists.
6. Leave a burning building without your head coverings, get thrown back inside to die a horrible death.
7. Convert the infidel or kill him, depending on whether you live in a place where there are more muslims that infidels, or vice versa. If there are more infidels, work to shift that balance and then go to plan A, kill or convert.
8. Use family members as bomb carriers. Mommy can always make more.
I could go on and on, but hey.
The unquestionable extent to which the entire world media is skewed against both Jews and Christians is astounding.
Let him put that in his bong and smoke it.
Obama is not worried about the safety of our military. He is worried about how it would come down on him hard if one of them suffered for what was going to be released.
He voted for the pictures, before he was against them.
Since Dear Leader promised us transparency and promised to release the photos before the CHANGE to covering up "war crimes", does this now make him a reneger?
