Letter To My Children
from the Foreward to Witness ^ | Whittaker Chambers

Posted on 05/19/2009 8:12:19 PM PDT by EAGLE7

I am sitting in the kitchen of the little house at Medfield, our second farm which is cut off by the ridge and a quarter-mile across the fields from our home place, where you are. I am writing a book. In it I am speaking to you. But I am also speaking to the world. To both I owe an accounting. It is a terrible book. It is terrible in what it tells about men. If anything, it is more terrible in what it tells about the world in which you live. It is about what the world calls the Hiss-Chambers Case, or even more simply, the Hiss Case. It is about a spy case. All the props of an espionage case are there-foreign agents, household traitors, stolen documents, microfilm, furtive meetings, secret hideaways, phony names, an informer, investigations, trials, official justice...

The link is to the Foreward from Whittaker Chambers' Witness. It is a bit long but well worth the read. My prayer is that enough of the American people awake and realize the evil confronting the US. Hopefully it's not too late...

I am still stuck at about the halfway point in that book because every time I try to finish it, I get so depressed I can’t stand it.

I just read the Foreward. I guess I got alot to look forward to. But no matter how unpleasant the truth may be, it needs to be embraced. Knowing is the first step towards action.

I finished reading Mr. Chamber’s prophetic words. Yes, it was long, but I agree, it is definitely worth reading. America must wake up or we will be like lambs to the slaughter. If most of the herd doesn’t realize the danger, no amount of bleating from the other lambs will prevent the slaughter.

Well have your highlighter nearby when you read it. There is so much in there that he explains about how and why these people get sucked into communism - it explains so many things that I felt I understood instinctively, but didn't really know. For example, he talks about how abortion was the communist's birth control of choice, and how children were viewed as merely inconvenient to their political cause; or how taking daily baths was frowned upon as "bourgeois." (And I always thought hippies just smelled because they were too stoned to remember to bathe... but actually, they were making a political statement.) It's also very interesting to note that the communists looked for people from broken homes because they were so easily indoctrinated, especially if they could be led to believe that households headed by males were a societal problem.

There was one section that brought tears to my eyes - the part where he sent his wife to a back-alley abortionist and she came home still pregnant:

My wife came over to me, took my hands and burst into tears. "Dear heart," she said in a pleading voice, "we couldn't do that awful thing to a little baby, not to a little baby, dear heart." A wild joy swept me. Reason, the agony of my family, the Communist Party and its theories, the wars and revolutions of the 20th century, crumbled at the touch of the child. Both of us simply wanted a child. If the points on the long course of my break with Communism could be retraced, that is probably one of them--not at the level of the conscious mind, but at the level of unconscious life.

I hope I didn't spoil any of it for you!

No you didn’t spoil it at all. I sincerely believe that Communism is utterly evil. In a sense it is a religion. It is the exact opposite of Christianity, or ‘anti-Christ’.

It is interesting that Chambers Communist views crumble at “the touch of the child.” Reminds me of the Scripture which states, “And a child will lead them.”

Exactly. But what is so frightening - and what keeps me from finishing the book - is realizing that so much of their plan has actually come to pass. Even after Chambers and the Hiss case has long gone, the evil is still growing and is at this very moment flowering.

Don’t be afraid or discouraged by truth or reality. The reason Communism is flowering is because most free men won’t or can’t face its ugly reality. They turn a blind eye to it and avoid the pain of knowing. But, as Chambers writes....

“this tragedy will have been for nothing unless men understand it rightly, and from it the world takes hope and heart to begin its own tragic struggle with the evil that besets it from within and from without, unless it faces the fact that the world, the whole world, is sick unto death and that, among other things, this Case has turned a finger of fierce light into the suddenly opened and reeking body of our time.”

Ronald Reagn agreed with you, and had settled that in his mind while yet a young teen. Communism seperated man from his maker, and that had to be opposed. It was the guiding light of his life.

He knew what the battle was, in the same way that Chambers did. And why the evil had to be fought. The look throught that lens colors RR’s entire Presidency.

And God used him, Maggie Thatcher and Pope John Paul II to defeat what seemd to be an unstoppable foe, and to bring freedoms to hundreds of millions of people.

The evil was beaten back, but not extinguished. In our day we are called to oppose it once again.

We cannot be swayed by its power or its seeming dominance. It must be opposed. It must be fought.

It is now in our Federal government, and the goal is to extinguish the power of the greatest experiment, and example of human freedom man has ever experienced.

No matter how small we are, we must fight.

For the welfare of our posterity, those we love, depend on it.

Well said, or written. I do miss Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II. I agree. We must fight this evil. Expose it for what it is and shine a light on this darkness. If the US falls, which more and more seems to be a strong possibility, this will be a dark world indeed.
