The idea that the Jews went quietly is a fiction, the origin of which I never understood.
Certainly there were great efforts to conceal what was happening* and trick the populace, but by the time France was invaded, it was obvious.
* We have a post card from a distant relative that died in Dauchau to the effect of: “You would love scenic Dauchau! Lots of food; it’s so nice to be in an ethnically Jewish neighborhood — all the stores are kosher and you can easily walk to shul.”
Apparently, that was the scam.
