Black clergy opposing gay marriage resent civil rights comparision

Black clergy have long opposed the march toward legal same-sex marriages. Now, they’re also challenging the growing efforts of gay-marriage supporters to frame the issue as a civil rights cause.

The Rev. William Gillison, pastor of Mount Olive Baptist Church, a large African-American congregation on East Delevan Avenue, said he is insulted by the comparison.

“We know what we have gone through as an ethnic group. We feel the terminology, the definition itself, has really been hijacked,” he said. “Unfortunately, it’s just another ploy to garner more support from people who may not understand what the civil rights struggle was all about.”

I agree. I don't have a choice as to being half black or my ethnicity...homosexuals have the choice to engage in the sex acts they do.

Sex is something you do, ethnicity is something you are. Big difference.

> “My opposition to this is very simple. It’s not my biblical understanding of what marriage is,” Gillison said. “We believe when you’re talking marriage, it’s between a man and a woman. We don’t even believe marriage is man’s idea. It’s God’s idea. This has always been for us an issue that is one in the spiritual realm, not the political realm.”

He’s absolutely correct, to compare the 2 is folly. The richest people per capita are homosexuals, they are adored by Hollyweird and the big cities in this county.

The proponents of homosexual marriage also claim it’s the same as mixed race marriages that were prohibited in many states in the 1st half of the 20th century. It’s a bogus comparison because there was a 1 man and 1 woman that were denied being married.

Right now anyone can get married if they pick someone of the opposite sex, there is no discrimination.

exactly. This comparison has always angered me and I being white could not understand why black folks were not even more so than I. Glad to hear their are some that do and aren’t afraid to say something about it. It has gone on too long unchallenged. It is time.

Refreshing... finally

I have been wondering this for years!... why have blacks not been more forceful in this fight for their just cause of civil rights and let the homos paint them with the same brush... What an insult!

The incredible punishment they have been put through simply because the color of their skin in black should NEVER been equated with a group of homosexual degenerates who simply want to destroy our culture of any decent values.

I as a Hispanic, I would vomit if the fagots try to use my culture/race/etc to advance their agenda in any way what so ever.

I hope more blacks see the light as well.

I work in a 98% minority job and all of them I have ever talked to not only voted for Obama but do NOT support gay rights marriage.

When I tell them, Obama does, they deny reality!

Many blacks are blind. I pray and am doing everything I can to help them wake up. Obama is for gay marriage...he just can’t say anything about it because it would cost him politically.

From what I can tell, everyone I know who is black agrees, basically. Remember it was black people who defeated prop 8 in CA. Unfortunately, they seem to be overlooking the fact that Obama and the Democrats want to PUSH the gay agenda. Its no coincidence that gay marriages have been spreading through the country after Obama’s election.

I recently hear a Black Pastor say....”I know people who used to be gay but I do not know anyone who used to be black”.

Hello

Well, even though I have tried to put myself in their shoes and tried to FEEL what kind of rage or resentment I would feel if I had been treated like they were just 50 years ago, I have concluded I simply can not understand it because I did not experienced it on my own skin and that makes the whole difference.

I have black friends. I even commuted with a couple from Ghana for almost two years… You have no idea how conservative they are on social-values, such as homosexuals… it would shock you and yet, the voted for Obama and even begged me to vote for him… Why? Well, apparently for blacks, having a black president means/meant something none of us can understand… Having a president with black skin took precedence over everything else… That not even me as a Hispanic, a so called minority, can understand its significance. I mean, I ‘sort’ of understand it, but not really, not emotionally.

Besides, look at me, I did not vote for anyone for president. I could not vote for Obama for many reasons including social values, but also did not vote for MaCaca either!... And I don’t regret it one bit. Especially after I have heard what people in his organization, his daughter and wife even feel of this very subject..

I am very proud of the many social conservatives who kept their word and did the same as me… very proud!... Because even though Republicans lost, we social-conservatives could have lost the party all together with a social lefty like McCain. As it is, we must not be ignored the next time around or else...

Black people will rue the day they hitched their wagon to the Democrat Party. Unfortunately, by then, we all will.

You are a rare bird, indeed, but your perspective is right on the money. I am a white man, married to a black woman (from Jamaica). My wife’s hairdresser, a staunch church-goer, YET won’t hear anything negative about Obambi, even with all the evidence available.

Why choose any level of evil? Sarah Palin would likely have been put in the backround. It’s for the best that she will be able to run in ‘12.

Obama isn’t even black, he’s a descendant of Arab-African slave TRADERS. People have noticed that he looks more white/Arabic than Black. lol.

It was appalling to me how someone would vote for someone based on the color of the skin, instead of true convictions...it is just CRAZY to me. Most black people I know are aghast when they hear I didn’t vote for Obama.

My good friend was a vocal Obama supporter, and a Christian, but I showed her the truth of his agenda, the liberal agenda for black people, and she is now very much anti-Obama and will campaign against him. Unfortunately America, as a whole, has been given over to an anti-Christ spirit.

We’re not all BRAINWASHED...LOL

“Having a president with black skin took precedence over everything else”

Well, in that case, perhap the “chickens have come home to roost”—to quote one of 0’s favorite clergy.

I've been hearing this argument for years. People acting like "Gay liberation" is akin to Rosa Parks refusing to move from her seat.

I don't think these idiots realize just how much making such a comparison damages their cause and their credibility.

I recently hear a Black Pastor say....”I know people who used to be gay but I do not know anyone who used to be black”.

Just a laugh for you. My buddy at work and I have been working together for years. He's a terrific guy and simply brilliant. He's dark but I never really categorized him in any way, because well, so is half my family and everyone I know is a little different racially or ethnically. This is SoFlo - pretty common.

So we got into a light conversation on race and culture, and he began to make a comment beginning with "As a black man.." I had to stop him and ask "When did that happen?" People lost their milk over it...terrible mess, but it was pretty funny all the same.

Well, just like I said... I don't understand it beacuse I am not black, as I said it in my post. But then again, didn't blacks vote for Obama in the 90% or above level? so, what else is there to say?
