Banning the pickup truck
Las Vegas Review-Journal ^ | 21 may 09

Posted on 05/21/2009 3:57:09 AM PDT by rellimpank

The Tuesday headline was clear: "Obama's new rules will transform U.S. auto fleet."

The Associated Press picked it up from there: "Some soccer moms will have to give up hulking SUVs. Nearly everybody else will drive smaller cars, and more of them will run on electricity. The higher mileage and emissions standards set by the Obama administration on Tuesday, which begin to take effect in 2012 and are to be achieved by 2016, will transform the American car and truck fleet.

"The new rules would bring new cars and trucks sold in the United States to an average of 35.5 miles per gallon, about 10 mpg more than today's standards. Passenger cars will be required to get 39 mpg, light trucks 30 mpg. That means cars and trucks on American roads will have to become smaller, lighter and more efficient."

Eric Fedewa, vice president of global powertrain forecasting for an auto consulting firm, told The AP the changes will make pickup trucks so much more expensive that they'll be used almost exclusively for work.

Oh, heavens. We're growing faint.

The wise and powerful wizard Obama, having loaned taxpayer money to Detroit to "bail them out" -- thus avoiding simple bankruptcy, where the firms might have shed their overly costly union contracts and emerged to renewed profitability -- now simply decrees what kind of cars Detroit will make. He might as well just put Howard Waxman, Charlie Rangel and Barney Frank in the executive offices at the Big Three, in fedoras and double-breasted striped zoot suits like Ayn Rand's Wesley Mouch, Cuffy Meigs, and Emma Chalmers, and have done with it.

Obviously Obama and company believes that pick-ups are just for rednecks to display their guns and confederate flags and serve no purpose.

One just has to look at Europe to see what happens.

First, you do not see home improvement stores in Europe because customers do not have vehicles that can pickup supplies for the do-it-yourselfer.

Second, delivery services are huge. Trucks are only owned by delivery companies that make money delivering large objects to people's homes. Those large objects include televisions, furniture, etc. In the US, we pick those things up ourselves with our SUV or pickup truck.

Oh, those delivery companies pay higher registration, insurance and road taxes on their trucks.

In the US, ranchers and farmers use pickup trucks for a wide variety of uses. They will either have to register these (expensive) as gas guzzlers and pay extra taxes on them or pay someone to come and move hay around for them.

The average person does not understand how these rules will fundamentally affect the way Americans live. Say goodbye to Home Depot, Lowes, etc. Say goodbye to Best Buy and large electronics retailers. Small mom & pop feedmills will be replaced by a few large chain feedmills that will deliver to farmers on certain days of the week as they make their route.

Just think about all the things Americans do that utilizes their large SUVs and pickups and imagine all that gone tomorrow.

Of course, Obama and the liberals want this to happen. They do not want you to have large homes that you expand yourself. They do not want weekend farmers who have a few head of CO2-producing cattle and horses for fun.

I don’t think they will take your truck.

They are much more likely to require something similar to a CDL to drive it.

The restrictions will probably be such and the cost high enough that most present day truck owners will not go to the trouble.

In 2016, when all these new cars are out there, the lack of electricity will immediately be blamed on the new Republican President with the MSM leading the outrage..

These new regulations definitely hurt larger families since there is no vehicle that meets the new CAFE standards that would be large enough to hold more than 4 or 5 people. In other words, larger families would have to take 2 cars in order to go somewhere together, which would negate any fuel savings. But Obama obviously doesn’t care what impact these rules have on the average citizens. After all, he isn’t going to be driven around in a hybrid. What a hypocrite.

You’ll just have to be re-educated to the new way of thinking....

s/(i think)

Let them try. I would rather die an American with values then live re-educated by these morons that we have in govt. I think they will try to re-educate people or else brainwash the young after they kill the people who won't go along with their plan.

The people have the power regardless of what the feds plan....turn the tables and the power on them and they will scatter like rats.

Saying over and over again that people have the power or passing resolutions that some state or other believes in the Tenth Amendment, changes nothing. I won't roll over but neither will I naively tilt at windmills.

Illegal aliens that number maybe 20-30 million can bring millions into the streets to rally for their "rights". When I see 10 million or more legal Americans in the streets rallying for their rights then the elite might take notice. I don't see this happening because of the nature of people that have been "ruled" for so long they are total government dependents. Even the California vote was by a small minority and was mostly about money. If California had enough money to fund all their "programs", and they might just get it from the Feds, the people of California would not even be putting up protest votes against the destruction of their liberties.

“....My husband needs our SUV for work. He can’t fit all his tools in a tiny car.”

Ahhh...
You’re learning...

Don’t worry, he’ll just have to get into the spirit of “CHANGE!”, and work at one of those “Green” jobs instead.

You may starve before he ever gets one, but what’s a few lives and human misery compared to SAVING THE PLANET, AND LOWERING THE LEVEL OF THE OCEANS, Really?

I mean, it’s not like the IMPORTANT PEOPLE, like Obama and his Socialist minions will have to suffer, and isn’t that more importatant than YOU, or your family??

Travelodge went out of business in Jan. I might end up living in it...If the Acorn people don’t report I have one sitting in my driveway when they come to GPS my front door.

I know. We have a motorhome. I am sure they already counted it as the residence of eight Democrats. Might as well open the propane valves and stand back.

Instead of bitching about it, we should be surrounding Washington D.C. with 100 million people with pitchforks.

And torches, tar, and plenty of rope.

“It is the people who suffer”

NO YOU WON’T!! You will all be alike. You will drive the same type small car, wear the same clothes, live in the same size house, have free health care, eat the same food, listen to the same music, say the same prayer, march in the same Parade, refrain from free thoughts that cause you to lose sleep, and praise the State for providing all your needs.!! From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.”

I wonder what the travel trailer manufacturers are thinking right now. You can’t pull one of those babies with VW bug. And don’t even ask about motor homes.

Some soccer moms will have to give up hulking SUVs.

A couple of years back, my wife's Ford Expedition was T-boned by a Full-sized work truck doing about 55 mph. She was driving and my two little girls were in the middle row of seats. The Expedition was totalled! The worst injury suffered was a small bruise on my youngest daughter's hip from her seat belt.

I replaced the Expedition with an even larger Ford Excursion. My family is worth FAR MORE than saving a little fuel...
