The Texas Senate today gave final approval to a measure that would allow persons holding concealed handgun licenses to carry firearms on Texas public college and university campuses. The legislation now moves to the Texas House where it has strong bipartisan support.

The legislation passed despite strong opposition from student government and leaders at the University of Texas and some other schools. Many students, nonetheless, have advocated for concealed carry on campus following the Virginia Tech massacre.

Geeeeez, guess I don’t understand exactly what the law says in regarding to date of effectiveness. The bill says the active date is Sept. 1 2009. Above it, the date of Sept. 1, 2010 is mentioned and the Senate yesterday referred to the fact that it would not go into effect until 2010.

So, which one? As a CHL holder, my wife is VERY interested. She teaches at a Texas institute of “higher” learning.

Also, while I’m asking - anyone know anything as to the status of HB1863 - the States Rights issue regarding the manufacture and sale of guns within Texas not being subject to any Federal law or regulation.

I'm proud you brought this up as I would like to know the status of that bill. Thanks

I will snoop around the Internet and ask my wife to make a call to Austin.

Sweet.

I live in MI and I am thrilled with this. This can only spread to other states -- hopefully before there are more mass murders on campuses. Go, Students for Concealed Carry!!!!
