Poll: Americans Don't Want Obama to Appoint Abortion Activist to Supreme Court

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new national poll conducted by the Polling Company finds that American don't want President Barack Obama to appoint a pro-abortion activists to the Supreme Court. Obama is considering one of several potential replacements for retiring pro-abortion Justice David Souter.

The data reveal that Democrats, Republicans, and Independents agree by overwhelming majorities that they want Supreme Court Justices who disavow pro-abortion activism.

In a survey conducted May 17-18 among 800 adults nationwide, the Polling Company asked Americans about positions a potential high court nominee could take.

Some 82 percent of Americans don't want a justice who would support late-term or partial-birth abortions, which the Supreme Court upheld a ban on with a narrow 5-4 ruling that saw Souter in the minority.

Another 69 percent don't want a justice who opposes the enforcement of parental involvement laws that require parental consent or notification, 71 percent don't want a judge who backs taxpayer-funded abortions in the U.S., and 89 percent don't want someone who backs funding abortions in other countries.

Also, 75 percent of Americans oppose a Supreme Court justice who would support the so-called Freedom of Choice Act, a Congressional bill that would not only make the unlimited abortions under Roe v. Wade a national law, but overturn all state laws that reduce or limit abortions.

The Polling Company survey also asked respondents about some statements or positions of potential nominees whose names have been floated in the national media and are thought to be on Obama's short list.

Without naming her, it found 57 percent of Americans would oppose a Supreme Court justice like Elena Kagan, currently the Solicitor General of the United States, who "criticized a Supreme Court ruling that upheld existing laws that prohibit taxpayer-funded organizations from counseling or referring women for abortions."

The poll also found, by a 70-22 percent margin, Americans oppose a nominee like Kathleen Sullivan of the Stanford Law School who, as the polling question said, "believes that the courts, and not the voters or elected officials, should make policies on abortion in the United States."

Responding to the poll, Americans United for Life, a pro-life legal and legislative group, send a memo to members of the U.S. Senate, urging them to consider the new abortion polling data when they evaluate Obama's Supreme Court nominee.

"Senators, we urge you to take these clear findings into consideration before you vote on the president's nominee and recognize that the majority of your constituents -- regardless of political party -- fervently oppose any type of judicial activism that would rescind common sense laws on abortion and its regulations," the memo said.

There's a 98% chance that that's what we're going to get. If there's one principle that Obama holds dear, it's the supposed right to kill babies.

IMO, they don’t want him to select a pro-abort, but they wouldn’t be all that upset if he did.

Excuse me but where were these ass-clowns on election day? This poll is un-freaking believable and says it all about the state of our electorate today.

There is a movie called “Idiocracy” that refers to life 500 years from now. I hate to say it but it has arrived early. Idiocracy is here today.

Did the poll ask people if they want a Justice who believes abortion should be banned under all circumstances?

“Tough, because Øbama does not care what you think, and will Appoint the most rabid Abortion Activist he can find.”

It’s true: the opinion of hard-left elites matter far more to Obama than the general public. They would be apoplectic if he dared appoint anyone not fitting the description you suggested. Remember: “I won” has been sufficient justification for Obama to do pretty much what he wants since January 20. How many voters in November expected or wanted the U.S. government to be running auto companies, deciding on executive compensation levels and to have the “privilege” of buying 35-mph cars that cost $1300 more and are death-traps to boot? http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123993371229527975.html

Since when has what the American people want mattered via polling numbers?

Did not the majority of American people not want bailouts?
Geezus, the list can go on......

All of those “wants” were ignored.
This poll of what Americans want or don’t want will invariably be ignored as well.
