Sarah Palin agrees to come to Auburn June 6 for Founders Day

Gov. Sarah Palin is coming to Auburn June 6.

The Alaskan governor and former Republican vice presidential candidate will travel to Auburn for what the city organizers call Founders Day, which this year will celebrate 50 years of Alaskan statehood.

Auburn's Meghan Stapleton, Palin's former press secretary who continues to work for her as a spokesman in nongovernment matters, confirmed the visit with Auburn officials in recent days.

Alaska and Auburn are linked through William H. Seward, who lived much of his adult life in Auburn and was secretary of state under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Seward negotiated the deal with Russia in which the U.S. bought Alaska on March 30, 1867, for $7.2 million.

Stapleton's father, Auburn lawyer T. David Stapleton, sits on the board of the Seward House in Auburn, and wrote the invitation on behalf of the city and the Seward House.

It's not clear where else in New York Palin might visit.

"Auburn is the anchor," Meghan Stapleton said. "We're still trying to decide her schedule. "We're coming to Auburn because of the direct celebration of Alaska and the role of Auburn's William Seward. The governor is absolutely excited."

An Auburn committee planning the June 6 event, which will include a parade with a dog sled, is calling it Founders Day.

The date has no historical significance for Auburn or Alaska. Alaska became a state in January 1959; Seward Day, an Alaskan state holiday, falls on the last Monday in March.

She has also been announced as being an honoree at Independent Group Home Living:

She’s definately on a roll the last 3 weeks.

My bet is that the Auburn Founders Day will attract twice as many people this year than last, and that the IGHL event will be maximum capacity. Both will generate a lot of positive local media coverage.

Yay, I got my Palin fix today! Thanks FR!

Seward’s folly turned out to be a wonderful thing.

They could use her at the Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls. Every year they induct a bunch of liberals. Elizabeth Dole is the only Republican I can think of who made it. Maybe Margaret Chase Smith, too, back in the day.
