Sea level threat revised: Scientific data challenge fears of sunken islands

MAAYA THILA, Maldives

Since climate change fears first gripped the globe, tourists have flocked to the Maldives to enjoy the islands' spectacular vistas before they vanish. Do they really need to rush? Scientists have long warned that the Maldives, an archipelago nation of nearly 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean, will be wiped out by rising sea levels in the coming decades. President Mohamed Nasheed is so convinced of his nation's demise he has proposed relocating all 350,000 inhabitants to other countries. On average, the islands are 7 feet above sea level, making them the lowest-lying nation on Earth.

Most experts agree the Maldives have plenty to worry about: In the worst-case scenario, if global sea levels rise higher and faster than expected, the islands may indeed be swallowed up.

But some recent data challenge the widespread belief that the islands are destined to disappear - and a few mainstream scientists are even cautiously optimistic about their chances for surviving relatively intact beyond the next century.

"The outlook for the Maldives is not all doom and gloom," said Paul Kench of the University of Auckland in New Zealand. "The islands won't be the same, but they will still be there."

Mr. Kench said his studies of the Maldives show the islands can adjust their shape in response to environmental changes, such as the rising seas and warmer temperatures predicted in the next century.

Mr. Kench suggests the islands might move onto their reefs and build vertically, offsetting the potential threat of sea level rises. His research - published together with other scientists from Australia, New Zealand and the Maldives - shows some islands have rebuilt themselves as much as 1.6 feet higher. Their studies have been published in recent years in journals including Geology and the Journal of Geophysical Research.

What kind of pseudoscientific BS is this?!? He's saying that the geologic formation "knows" that global warming climate change is going to drown the it, so it will build itself up to counteract that? And still people think that global warming is not some kind of religion?

Will someone PLEASE show me where sea levels have risen anywhere in the World? Show me! Antarctica is growing; Greenland's glaciers are sliding faster into the sea because of a mantel hot spot underneath (proven); and so on...

Is it just me or have others seen the data that the last 8-9 years have been the coolest on record for decades? Does anyone but us on these boards talk about the Solar Minimum? The now extended cooling of the Sun that has been without sunspots for more years than the 11 year cycle?

The average temperature of the Earth has been cooling for almost a decade. What is wrong with these so-called scientific experts? Hell, New Jersey had frost just this week in MAY!!! My own area in Southern California requires a long sleeve shirt in May, usually it's t-shirt and shorts time of this year. WTF?

Liberals piss their pants whenever they feel any sort of heat while they are at the beach, thus causing the sea levels to rise.

from 2007:

In the 100% Muslim state of Republic of Maldives, apostasy will carry the death penalty. The Constitution requires all citizens to be Muslims of the Sunni sect. Although there is no law that states that apostasy carries the death penalty, the Constitution also says that all laws of the country must be in adherence to the Koran. You see the taqiyya?

The international community has to address the issue.

Maldivian Christians are living in secrecy. If they were to be found out, they are thrown in jail and tortured by the brutal police of President Abdul Gayoom, the Egyptian Islamic preacher President and Top Imam of the country until they recant. When the brutal police murdered Ivan Naseem in custody, the unofficial reason for the public to ignore his death was that he tore up a Koran
Because the population is only 300,000 and there is bigger stuff happening elsewhere, we are always ignored. Thus this mullah president can do whatever he wants.

The Christian peoples of Europe who come and enjoy the beautiful resorts hotels of the Maldives either do not know or care that their co-religionists are living in secrecy and fear in the fishing village where they go to buy their souvenirs.

Yes. You can add the Republic of Maldives to the list of nations that carry the death penalty for leaving Islam.

It is as if we are in a Church and no one is listening except the choir. The Preachers need to start yelling. ;0)

He could always take the Maldives into the landfill business. I know if I don’t dust here at 668, the interior of the house would have a new layer of flooring within a year; and outside, if I don’t have the lawn cut, the trees would put a new carpet on top of the old one every year.
In other words, there is a way to make your own higher ground, faster than the ocean rises. Just quit pickin’ stuff up when it falls.

Got ocean rise? Get land fill!

The arguments have become so convoluted that I am ready to tune out.
You can be very suspicious of the AGW scam artist when they
refuse to acknowledge skeptics, such as myself.
If you are not a confirmed member of the church of AGW, then you are a “DENIER”. Skeptics are not accepted.

The world changes. It always has and always will, as long as it exist.
In recorded history we have seen warm and cold, as in the MWP and the little ice age.
Over thousands of years, I am sure islands and coastlines will sink or wash away, and others will form.

At age 65, “What, me worry?”
I will now get back to a glass of fine red wine, as I listen to the surf lap at my doorstep, as it has for probably thousands of years.

Please, with one good earthquake aimed just right, our friend Sue Nomee will eliminate all of the Maldives and the Seychelles to boot.

this does not require Gorebull Warming to happen.

Did the option of erecting sea defences not get considered?

Since 1998 was by all accounts the hottest year on record there has, by definition, been net cooling for the last eleven years. The last three years have seen a sharp decline in global temperatures, which has gone pretty well unacknowleged by the IPCC and other climate scam organizations. The very telling metrics right now are the non-rising sea level for the last three years (JASON satellite measurements), current total sea ice higher than the (somewhat cooked) global baseline sea ice extent, and no extra ocean heat content as detected by the ARGO buoys. The current climate is entirely outside the error bands of the projected climate provided by Hansen/IPCC in 1998.

icecap.us is a good aggregate site for global cooling information.

There was a recent, full page ad published in several major newspapers (CATO Institute?) pointing out to the President that the “consensus” on global warming, isn’t one. There were several Nobel Prize winners among the dozens of prominent scientific signatories. There’s also an online petition with thousands of scientists pointing out that the science is far from settled.

None of that appears to matter to the politicians, who seem hell bent on charging ahead and wrecking America as they see fit, regardless of need or our desires.

I'm thinking similar. If the surf heats up then no need for wetsuit. If the surf cools down, I will invest Billibong!

Har!

It’s islam, it’s extortion. Read between the lines:

The Maldives and Rising Sea Levels

13. Level of Strategic Interest: Global and Multilateral
Climate Change and rising ocean levels is an issue that will affect the entire world. At the same time, the dispute has the potential to become a multilateral issue. As the rising ocean levels threaten the Maldives, the country’s residents will be forced to move to other countries, such as India or Sri Lanka. Any conflict within the Maldives could be transferred to these countries. Additionally, it is possible that the Maldives would seek to be compensated by polluting countries for the loss of their islands. However it is unclear whether the Maldives would seek new sovereign territory elsewhere. Additionally, it is unclear whether the Maldives would seek that territory in neighboring countries, or elsewhere, such as in countries that contributed to the climate change in the first place, such as the United States or China.
