Update: May 26 2009 The daily image update has been temporarily suspended because of large areas of missing data in the past week. NSIDC currently gets its data from the SSM/I sensor on the DMSP F13 satellite, which is nearing the end of its operational life and experiencing intermittent problems. NSIDC has been working on a transition to a newer sensor on the F17 satellite for several months. At this time, we have more than a year of data from F17, which we are using to intercalibrate with F13 data. The F17 data are not yet available for near-real-time updates. We will resume posting daily updates as soon as possible, either from F13, if the present problem is resolved, or from F17, when the transition is complete.
I had noticed that the past few weeks.
The past few days large areas of gray were noted in the ice areas. I take it that was the missing data.
Funny how the melt was picking up so much speed after a fairly normal period of temp.
Yeah, I’d been getting worried that we were going to have to put up with “record ice melt” all summer.
The question is not whether we use a different satillite for info but the real question should be whom is doing the programming for it. Since we are now a shadow of the USSR under Stalin remember this quote: having a ballot is not the answer, the answer is whom does the counting.
It’s amazing how an organization with “data” in its name can put out so much propaganda in its writings.
My work has been intimately involved with instrument calibration for over two decades. What the heck does “Intercalibrate” mean?
My guess is that it is a quasi-technical sounding term meant to impart validity without acknowledging that they have absolutely no measurement standard.
Getting two sensors to read the same, or to read what they want it to read? Nothing to do with accuracy.
Yeah I know. I was trying to be a little sarcastic.
The people charged with measuring the climate seem to have a piss poor grasp on the fundamentals of measurement.
Intercalibrate: To make the instruments read exactly what you want them to read..............

NSIDC pulls the plug on Arctic Sea Ice Graphs

Excerpt:
During the the last week, NSIDC graphs of arctic sea ice extent have been dropping so steeply that many have called them into question. Finally NSIDC ended the daily updates and ... have placed an out of order sign on the website:
As we first pointed out to NSIDC back on 2/18/09 (even though it wasnt worth blogging about) the sensor has been on the fritz for quite awhile, calling the whole arctic sea ice series into question.

From their most recent announcement, it looks like that it is now DOA: Graph: http://wattsupwiththat.com/
Heres what they say now. [snip] Click HERE: http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/05/26/nsidc-pulls-the-plug-on-artic-sea-ice-graphs/#more-8033

BONUS: How not to make a climate photo op. bttt http://wattsupwiththat.com/
Coal mines, oil and gas wells would only be allowed to produce so much. This is not being done or even proposed. Why do you suppose that is?
Simple: There's no tax money in it for the politicians.
I think they use an Etch-a- Sketch.
