A couple of years ago the cops mistakenly broke down the door of a former co-worker of mine at 6 in the morning. They scared the crap out of his wife and 3 kids but instead of apologizing and leaving they searched his house and arrested him for having an unlicensed shotgun.
He beat the case of course but it cost him $2900 in legal fees.
He sued the NYPD and the case is still dragging through the courts. He found out later that his next door neighbor heard the commotion and flushed 6 ounces of heroin down the toilet.

Another great reason not to live in NYC (unlicensed shotgun, what the hell is that!?)
