Sotomayor Helped Puncture Vince Foster Conspiracy Theories
TPM ^ | 5/29/09 | Jeff Morley

Among Sonia Sotomayor's many judicial accomplishments is the piercing one of the federal government's unnecessary and counterproductive claims of secrecy--and the right-wing conspiracy theories it generated. As the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press notes, in 1995, Sotomayor ordered the public release of the legendary Vince Foster suicide note.

Sotomayor's Republican critics may not want to call attention to her jurisprudence in this case. Her order helped drain the fever swamps of right-wing fantasists who said that Foster had been murdered. It also effectively silenced the editors of the Wall Street Journal, Rush Limbaugh and others who had kept the bogus claim alive for years with little more than innuendo.

Foster was a White House deputy counsel in the first Clinton administration and a close friend of First Lady Hillary Rodham from their days as law partners in Arkansas. As the Wall Street Journal editorial page mounted a steady stream of attacks on the Clinton's investment in an Arkansas real estate development known as Whitewater alleging that the Clintons were hiding something (exactly what was never clear), Foster became despondent. He committed suicide in a Virginia park overlooking the Potomac River on July 20, 1993.

A day later the White House revealed that a torn-up suicide note had been found in Foster's brief case prompting Limbaugh to say

"had this sort of thing happened in the Reagan or Bush administrations, the press would be all over the White House, insisting that a cover-up was in progress."

In fact, Foster's suicide was exhaustively investigated. By 1995, two law enforcement inquiries and two congressional investigations reached the conclusion that Foster had committed suicide.

I love how ‘Congressional Investigations’ or investigating yourself can clear all doubt when dealing with the ‘right wing’.

Gee, how did I miss that? Did she explain why the bullet was never found? The very odd angle the gun was in Foster’s hand? The lack of fingerprints on the suicide note? The lack of sufficient blood at the scene?

Good. So now maybe she can order release of the Birth Certificate?

So maybe we should ask her if, in keeping with her work on the Vince Foster suicide note, she would get Obama to release his real birth certificate to deflate that controversy as well.

Foster suicide note was a forgery, say experts

Thursday, 26 October 1995

Washington (Reuter) - Someone forged the torn-up suicide note that was discovered after White House lawyer Vincent Foster was found with a fatal gunshot wound, a group of handwriting experts said yesterday.

Three handwriting specialists presented analysis at a news conference of the note found in Foster’s briefcase after the deputy White House counsel was found dead on 20 July 1993 in a park near Washington. They said it appeared the note was not written by Foster but was a forgery.

US Park Police and former independent counsel Robert Fiske concluded that Foster had committed suicide and that he had written the note, but his death has given rise to some conspiracy theories that Foster was murdered.

The note, said to have been written days or weeks before Foster died, complained of life in Washington and concluded: “I was not meant for the job or the spotlight of public life in Washington. Here ruining people is considered sport.”

The handwriting specialists, former New York police department homicide expert Vincent Scalice, Oxford University manuscript expert Reginald Alton, and Boston private investigator Ronald Rice, said comparisons with a letter Foster had written had enough differences in style and letters to conclude the suicide note was not written by Foster.

John Bates, an associate counsel with Kenneth Starr, Mr Fiske’s successor as the independent counsel investigating the Whitewater land deal of President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, said the investigation of the Foster episode “is open and ongoing.”

Dr Alton described the “forgery” as done by a “moderate forger, not necessarily a pro, somebody who could forge a check.”

I add-The gun, itself-old, not recognized by Foster's family; the changed position of Foster's body; the disappearance of pictures; the cleaning out of Foster's office while STILL a crime scene.

Unlike some people I know, I have never thought the Clinton's actually planned some of the deaths that happened on their watch-Foster, Ron Brown (another case of pictures disappearing), many of the Arkansas incidents---BUT, I do think they had friends in low places (Ark. mafia, etc.)who did scheme and plan, and I do believe much of what happened the Clinton's had knowledge of. Of course, Hill is devious enough to plan almost anything.

And if I recall the hand writing analyst that first validated that the note was written by Foster, in a later ‘blind’ analysis where only some words of the ‘suicide note’ were sampled were compared to other samples of Foster’s writing, without him knowing the source of the words, found no relation to the sample given. IOW, when he knew it was a ‘suicide note’ from Foster, he ruled in the positive and when he didn’t know that, where he might be biased, he said there was no positive identification between the samples.

Sinclair got tired of all the thug tactics against his potential publishers. He started his own publishing company.
