Correcting the record: Abortions went down under President Bush, not up

During last night's "discussion" between pro-life/pro-Obama Prof. Doug Kmiec and pro-life/anti-Obama Prof. Robert George, Kmiec repeated a false statement.

Kmiec said the number of abortions went UP under President George W. Bush. On Fox News Sunday May 17 Fr. Richard McBrien, a pro-Obama Notre Dame theology professor, made the same erroneous claim in a debate with Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life.

My friend, Professor (and statistical analyzer) Michael New, wants to correct the record:

The data do not bear this out. In fact the most recent data from both the Centers for Disease Control and the Alan Guttmacher Institute (research arm of Planned Parenthood) indicate that abortions fell during George W. Bush's presidency.

According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute between 2000 and 2005 the number of abortions declined from 1,312,990 to 1,206,200 (a decline of 8.1%, data obtained from all 50 states)....

According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute the abortion rate (abortions per thousand women between 15 and 44) between 2000 and 2005 declined from 21.3 to 19.4.

According to the Centers for Disease Control between 2000 and 2005 the number of abortions declined from 842,553 to 818,196 (a decline of 2.9% for the 46 states reporting data both years).

According to the Centers for Disease Control the abortion rate (abortions per thousand women between 15 and 44) between 2000 and 2005 declined from 16 to 15.

Note: CA and a few other states do not report data to the CDC which is why their numbers are lower.

Under no metric does the incidence of abortion increase during the Presidency of George W. Bush.

The left believes its okay to ‘just lie’ in order to make a point. I don’t need no stinkin facts. Sickening.

Prof. Robert George, Kmiec is a traitor to the cause. The reasons for the number of Abortions going down may not be directly because of Bush but it was because of conservatives winning legislative victories restricting abortions and requiring informed consent. We are winning on this issue because we fight and we haven’t given up. Some day we will overturn Row V Wade.

You are exactly right. They just lie. They lied about the number of back alley abortions to push the issue in the first place. It doesn’t matter the issue whether it is global warming, national security, sexual activism they lie big and hope most won’t bother to check before they’ve intimidated enough to keep the opposition marginalized.

Prof. Doug Kmiec needs to be excommunicated from the Catholic Church. He can find a new home with the feel-good religionists Joel Osteen and Rick Warren.

Though this may not have been a factor (significant), there was much more funding for abstinence education under President Bush.

If you followed the Notre Dame Scandal, you might realize that trucks and an airplane showed the message of abortion.

This campaign had a billboard on a truck (or trailing from the airplane) with the words "Fetus" and "abortion", and a picture of an aborted baby/fetus. It would also have something to indicate the size of the fetus.

It is also possible that younger women/girls are wising up -- sex before marriage just isn't worth the risk of aids and a number of Veneral Diseases that now run rampant in our country...

One reporting body is part of Planned Parenthood...

This has the larger number.

The other is part of the US Government -- CDC.

The CDC does not report the number of abortions in California.

Since California is the state with the greatest population, this does make a difference.

Illegal abortions may not be reported to the CDC (late term abortions, statutory rape abortions that protects an adult male boyfriend, etc).

There would be reason for some abortion clinics to hide numbers, as they could be prosecuted by the government.
