Squatter Explosion [in NYC]
NY Post ^ | 5/31/9

They should be prime local real estate -- a line of 16 quaint bungalows in the Rockaways, right on the beach, decorated with sea air and sunshine.

Instead, like a growing number of abandoned and foreclosed properties around New York City, they are home to only squatters -- eight Salvadorans who ripped away cheap plywood that sealed the doors and windows and set up camp.

The shacks are in bad shape, lacking water, heat and electricity. But the few that are habitable have been turned into adequate shelters, complete with front porches, buckets to collect rainwater, and small courtyard gardens seeded with jalapeno peppers and tomatoes.

"It's nice and calm here," said Roberto Escobar, a 53-year-old native of El Salvador who used to make his living as a day laborer until business dried up.

Unable to pay the $300 a month on his rented room, Escobar was out on the streets -- until he heard from some construction buddies about the cluster of abandoned bungalows there for the taking. With no housing expenses to speak of, he and his countrymen live off redeeming recyclables.

Across the city, squatters like Escobar are becoming a familiar sight, as more tenants get evicted and foreclosed homes and abandoned construction sites provide ample vacancies for vagrants and vagabonds.

Of course! And when the bank finally unloads the property to a developer, some slip-and-fall lawyer will take the new owners to court, since it's "inhuman" to evict these "virtual tenants"...

they're just inspired by Great Leader's example... you can do anything if nobody's got the guts to stop you.

El Salvador is even better. Deport him. "Squatting", from what I've read, is a big problem in several cities in Europe. They get violent when they're asked to vacate.

I don't like the squatters, but I have a hard time feeling sorry for the bank if it is one that did the same thing to my wallet with TARP.

These must be some of those " green" jobs that Obumbler and the Democrat stooges are always carping about.

Just think...Now they have addresses from which to legally vote for more taxes for social services.

Obama will allocate money for a new program, “community reinvestment and preservation” (CRAP) in order to fixup the beachfront properties to their intended glory...For the “current” occupants.

Please, please stay on focus here. It wasn't the banks.

It was the federal government from about the 1970’s that created, generated, and burst the housing bubble.

TARP was nothing more than the excuse to put government regulated banks under absolute federal control. First force the people onto welfare, next “force” businesses onto the the government welfare program and exert control.

This is nothing new. There are large areas of torn down and abandondend Bungalows over in the Rockaways. The city was hoping to have Casino gambling out there, but it never happened. So I am surprised that it took this long before some one decided to do this.

I think we will see specialized pest control organizations formed and doing this sort of business. The only problem is the vermin here are a protected species. Only white rats a not protected.

How long before one or more of these roach motels goes up in flames and takes out about 15 or 20 of these hot-cotters and we hear the whining for these poor folks from the MSM.
