From 1977 to 1979, the retired Air Force colonel commanded the 46th Aerospace Defense Wing at Peterson Air Force Base. For decades he has been a flight instructor, owning his own school and even serving on the city's airport advisory board.
Perhaps this kind of history makes Thursday's incident just a little embarrassing.
His plane ran out of gas.

I can eeasily beat that.
I was crash fire Rescue till last year at AFW.
I made an incident where a retired Col. landed wheels up with his young grandson aboard.
After a fly by he circled and landed and forgot one little step.

Is he embarrassed he ran out of gas or failing to teach his student basic pre-flight? What is worse

It wasn’t fuel loss (like it leaked out), it was fuel exhaustion, he just ran out of gas.

A salty old guy that I used to fly with told me years ago that "Three most useless things to a pilot were fuel left in the gas truck; altitude above you; and ideals you hadn't thought of yet".
God rest his sole. I took that adage to heart.
