The long arm of the long census form
I have yet to see the actual form, have any of you?
Not yet...
Er, yeah....
Census bureau gave up WWII internment camp evadersThe United States Census Bureau turned over names and addresses of American citizens of Japanese descent to the Secret Service during World War II. Though the rest of this weeks identity loss stories pale in comparison, it illustrates vividly the most important point about protecting your privacy, and who is the biggest threat to your security....
Got an American Community Survey in late 2007. Then they got concerned that the first got lost in the mail a few weeks later, so they sent me a second one. Also they sent some post cards reminding me to fill out the form. The second month they called me regularly and reminded my answering machine to fill out my form for me (they couldn't have been talking to me). The third month they knocked on my door and left they business cards and brochures that ranged from the pleading (If you don't fill out the ACS, how will your city get money for schools and roads. Little Johny will grow up uneducated and won't even be able to drive away.) to threatening (Under United States Code xxx.yyy you are required to accurately complete the ACS or you will be subject to fines and or jail time). Then I never heard from then again.
Here's another website of people's battles with the Census and the ACS
Guy in the cubicle next to me at work got one. He got randomly selected to be an early reporter or something like that.
I’ll see if I can scan it for all of us to look at it.
The PDF form is listed here: http://www.census.gov/acs/www/SBasics/SQuest/SQuest1.htm
I have it sitting right here. How much is my mortgage payment, how many acres do I have, how much would I sell my property for, when was it built, how many cars do I have, do I have a sink with a faucet (seriously, that is on there), how many times have I been married, how much do I make and from what sources, do I have trouble concentrating, remembering, or making decisions...unbelievable.
