Federal officials say a Washington, D.C.-area couple has been arrested and accused of spying for Cuba.

Officials say both are former U.S. government employees -- he from the State Department, she as a Congressional aide.

One official says the spying went on for more than two decades.

We expect to learn more details later today when a federal indictment is unsealed. For now, officials will not disclose the names or any other details....

You couldn't swing a dead cat in D.C. without hitting someone spying for, or giving aid and comfort to our enemies.

You also can't swing a dead cat with out hitting a PETA wacko. Man, that ticks them off!

Couple Indicted as alleged Cuban Spies

WASHINGTON (AP) - A retired State Department worker with top secret security clearance and his wife have been indicted on charges of spying for Cuba.

The indictment handed down by the attorney general’s office in Washington says Walter Kendall Myers and his wife, Gwendolyn Steingraber Myers, have been clandestine agents for Cuba for 30 years.

The indictment says the pair met with Cuban President Fidel Castro in Cuba in 1995, traveling through Mexico under false names. They allegedly made several other trips to Latin America and the Caribbean to meet with Cuban agents.

Kendall Myers worked at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute, where he specialized in European matters, before retiring in 2007. The indictment says in his last year of employment, Kendall Myers viewed more than 200 intelligence reports related to Cuba.

http://www.usdoj.gov/opa/pr/2009/June/09-nsd-554.html

Not that they deserve any excuse but:

“Finally, the affidavit alleges that Kendall Myers engaged in a scheme to defraud the State Department and the United States by means of false pretenses and caused the U.S. government to lose property, specifically money in the form of salary payments. By not disclosing his clandestine activity on behalf of the CuIS and by making false statements to the State Department about his status, Kendall Myers allegedly defrauded the State Department whenever he received his government salary. Gwendolyn Myers is also criminally liable for this alleged wire fraud scheme.”

sounds trumped up and weak to me.

MUCH MUCH more detail here:

http://www.capitolhillcubans.com/2009/06/congressional-aide-arrested-for-cuban.html

The affidavit further indicates that an analysis of Kendall Myers’ classified State Department work computer hard drive revealed that, from August 22, 2006, until his retirement on Oct. 31, 2007, he viewed more than 200 sensitive or classified intelligence reports concerning the subject of Cuba, while employed as an INR senior analyst for Europe. Of these reports concerning Cuba, the majority was classified and marked Secret or Top Secret, the affidavit alleges. An FBI review of Kendall Myers’ State Department security files further revealed numerous false statements by him to conceal the couple’s clandestine activities on behalf of the CuIS, the affidavit further alleges.

I wonder what this about:

Pay-Per-View - South Dakota Supreme Court Reports - Loislaw - Oct 29, 1980
Gwendolyn STEINGRABER and Walter Kendal Myers, Defendants and Appellees. 13017. Supreme Court of South Dakota. Argued May 23, 1980. ... Related web pages

Maybe she was working for Daschle. If she was an aide for a long time during this period, and it’s a SD politician she worked for, it’s gotta be Daschle. They only have like one rep and two senators and Daschle was their Rep 30 years ago.

State Department official who mocked Britain is arrested as Cuban spy

Posted by: Toby Harnden on Jun 5, 2009 at 21:44:52
Posted in: Foreign Correspondents

Wow. This story has just taken my breath away. Do you remember the State Department analyst in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research (relatively obscure but one of the US government's intelligence agencies) who caused a storm in late 2006 with his disdainful remarks about the US-US "special relationship?

His name was Kendall Myers and I was one of two British journalists who reported his decidedly undiplomatic comments. He retired quietly in 2007. Well, he's just been arrested as a spy for Cuba for nearly 30 years. The Cubans apparently knew him better as their Agent 202 I'm told that his comments made him something of a hero among career officials in some quarters of the State Department and he received only a minor admonishment for them.

Details from the indictment indicate that he could have been a major spy - he and his wife were allegedly recruited by a Cuban agent back in 1979 and Myers was directed to seek a job in either the State Department or CIA. He apparently applied to the CIA in 1981 but did not get hired. Myers and his wife Gwendolyn allgedly met President Fidel Castro in 1995 - not an audience, one would think, that would be granted to an insignificant spy. Indeed, David Kris, assistant attorney general for national security, described the couple's alleged spying for as "incredibly serious".

According to the indictment, they would pass secrets in Washington supermarkets and sometimes used Morse code. They were arrested after an FBI sting operation which involved an FBI agent approaching them pretending to be a Cuban spy and subsequently meeting them several times in Washington hotels.

I met Myers for a drink once back, I think, in 2001 or 2002, I think, at Chef Geoff's restaurant in downtown Washington. He wanted to get my opinions on whether hardline Unionist politicians might be prepared to cut a political deal with Sinn Fein and the IRA. He told me his brief was to provide "out of the box" thinking drawn from a variety of sources to career State Department diplomats formulating policy. At the time, the Good Friday Agreement peace deal in Northern Ireland peace was under severe strain.

I found him to be an erudite and well-read fellow who was an interesting conversationalist and was much more indiscreet that most State Department officials. He was clearly no fan of President George W. Bush and seemed to be fit the caricature of the pro-European, soft-Left type that is often levelled at the State Department by conservatives. The Department of Justice release here has lots more detail.
