Thanx for putting (Sir) WINSTON in the 1st sentence....I 1st thought it could have been referring to a certain Churchill of ill repute.
“We shall fight in Reston, we shall fight in the school parking lot and the strip malls, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the BWI cell-phone waiting areas, we shall defend our suburbs, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight in the Starbucks drive-thru lane, we shall fight on the commute lanes, we shall fight in the AMC Cineplex 20, and in the cubicles, we shall fight in the malls; we shall never surrender.”
If you have ever been to Coventry you’d understand his decision...
It’s in the same frame as Sir John Betjeman’s poem “Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough”
A common myth surrounding the bombing (due in part to such books as Winterbotham's The Ultra Secret) is that Coventry was deliberately undefended in order to prevent the Germans realizing that Enigma cipher machine traffic (information from which was termed Ultra) was being read by British cryptanalysts at Bletchley Park. This claim is untrue Winston Churchill was aware that a major bombing raid was to take place, but no one knew beforehand where the raid was meant to strike
