Virginia’s permit requests, gun sales rise at record clip
The Virginian Pilot ^ | June 8 2009 | Louis Hansen

Erin King squeezed into a packed classroom at Bob's Gun Shop with a new pistol and a mission.

She sat through two hours of instruction and fired off several dozen rounds at the range with her Guardian .32-caliber. The 26-year-old from Suffolk bought her first gun a few weeks ago and plans to get a concealed-carry permit next month.

She'll slip her pistol into a hidden holster and protect herself commuting to her part-time job cleaning offices at night. "I'm responsible for myself," King said.

As the classroom shows, she's not alone.

I see in the comments there is a liberal crying about laws that don’t exist.

I think I’ll be buying her a .40 cal full-frame pistol.

If it's for conceal carry I would think twice on the full frame .40. I carry a Glock 22 and like the gun a lot, but I plan on getting a Glock 27 at some point just due to the size. My wife carries the S&W 642, it fits well in even a small purse.

Not defending the paper, but there is another way to look at. Having growing numbers of people who feel compelled to carry firearms to protect themselves is a damning statement about how people view the current administration and where it is taking this country.

Libs from the 49 other states are oozing in, transforming formerly conservative VA into a reliable blue state. That the Dem hack Terry Mcauliffe has a good chance of election as governor is proof.

Yup. Law-abiding gun owners at least here in Tidewater tend to be quieter - although we’re finding our voices. Next local TP is two weeks from this coming Saturday.

We’ll know more after November. McDonnell is well-liked. You’re right, though - just that the carpet-bagger McAuliffe finds any traction at all is scary.

I’m going to shoot it next time I go to the range. I may like it better than my Taurus.

Just having the article, whatever its attitude is a plus for safety. It gets the bad guys’ attention. A whole lot of articles deploring guns and CCW tells the bad guys that some of their intended victims are dangerous and they don’t know which ones so the whole mugging/rape/B&E project is dangerous.

Wife and I got ours in about 3 weeks. The clerks at the court house were most helpful and acted like the were glad to have more permits in our county.

I moved back to VA after a few years away and had a CC permit in three weeks, a week before I was allowed to buy a gun in VA.

In AZ, I used my AZ CC permit as one form of ID to get an AZ Drivers license.

Different places, different laws.

Did it take a long time after you applied? I’m curious if it is that way all over?

When we moved from NH to ME a few months ago I had to convert my out of state ME permit to resident. I figured that it was equivalent to a renewal so I sent the full amount in. The main delay was them sending my check back and telling me I only needed to pay $2, the replacement fee. Got the new license in about a week. Maine might be blue but they are ok on guns.

I didn’t know the Czechs made Makarovs (or the Rumanians either).
I know the Poles, Russians, Bulgarians and E. Germans make or made them. Mine is E. German, from the Ernst Thalmann Werke, named for a Red thug killed in street fighting with the Nazis I believe.

I meant that I read the article and I read the comments. One of the things I find ridiculous about all of the fuss and fury is the inability to see any good in anything. Even if it IS written by a liberal.
