Running with the least money and fewest ties to vote-rich Northern Virginia, State Sen. R. Creigh Deeds has won the three-way Democratic primary for governor, paving the way for a rematch with Republican Bob McDonnell in the fall.
Deeds, 51, a country lawyer from Bath County in the western part of the state, was viewed as an unlikely winner against two Northern Virginians with entrenched political ties.
Known for his moderate views on such issues as gun rights, but also appreciated for his folksy style and attention to the Washington suburbs' cry for road improvements, Deeds was leading in Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun and Prince William counties.
Deeds had almost doubled the vote totals of each of his opponents, Democratic activist Terry McAuliffe and former Del. Brian Moran.
"Three weeks ago, this was a two-man race between McAuliffe and Moran," said Quentin Kidd, a political science professor at Christopher Newport University. "Deeds was going to win the rural vote and that's it. People are going to be talking about how he pulled this off for weeks and months."

Already posted under another title. Mea culpa.
Guess those “Washington Post” campaign signs helped?
This is very bad news for the GOP. We needed dipsh!t Moran or McAwful to win. Deeds has a very good chance of beating McDonnell. I don’t care what the polls show right now.
The tide is turning.
The punk is out!
Mr. Deeds goes to Town (Richmond?).
Mr. Smith went to Washington.
I can’t believe a member in the ‘Hair Club for Geithner’ lost!
I hope he’s Good.
Take your money and go home b*tch!
I didn’t follow this race closely, but thought McAuliffe was the front runner.
Maybe downstate Virginians weren’t impressed with his ties to the Clintons and national Democrats. From what I understand, Virginia is one of those states in which people in different regions of the states feel distinctly separate from other areas, sort of like New York City vs. Upstate New York.
That’s what I heard, that Deeds is their strongest candidate.
I've visited Lee County once upon a time ~ and I may be the ONLY person living in Northern Virginia other than a state employee or two around here who can actually say that.
At the time of the Revolution about half the people in what would become the United States lived in Virginia.
Why? He has no ties to NOVA, no ties to any big population center (unless you count Charlottesville as a big population center), and AFAIK has no military background.
McDonnell has ties to NOVA and Virginia beach and good military credentials. He should have a damn good shot if the GOP just doesnt screw up.
That just got me thinking if the primary, or whatever, was truly legitimate, or was this guy selected. Maybe I’m being paranoid.
I know he had fallen behind in the polls by the last week, and don’t know if the eastern VA vote was split, letting the guy from the south/west slip in.

Not really as Deeds is a conservative democrat..wish more repubs where like him
He is to the left of McDonnell.
I like that McAuliffe got beat, whatever else happens.
Turn out was less than 5%!!!!!!!! When are people going to wake up and get off the couch and vote in our primaries? Yes, this is a conservative democrat beating a carpetbagger, but this is happening all over they country... how can people not get out to vote in the primaries — where they can make change in government — and talk about tea parties??
