ALBANY - In the end, it was Malcolm Smith's BlackBerry that did him in.

Businessman Thomas Golisano, upset over tax and spending increases in the state budget, had journeyed to the Capitol in April to share with the Senate majority leader what he says were $1 billion worth of ideas for trimming costs. But Smith's attention quickly strayed to his e-mail, where it stayed for the rest of the meeting, Golisano said.

"We felt we were talking to the wall," the Paychex Inc. chairman and three-time Independence Party gubernatorial candidate said yesterday.

That's when Golisano, the billionaire vagabond of New York politics who helped the Democrats take the Senate last fall, decided to help the Republicans take it back.

Lesson of the day:

When speaking with your billionaire political patron, give him your undivided attention.

When you’re a dull normal like Smith, it’s hard to focus.

At every level, America has the best government money can buy.

The pity is they're usually spending our money to buy it.

Indeed. But moreso, when you have a meeting with someone it’s best to “stay on topic”.

To quote that sage Larry the Cable Guy
“I don't care who you are, that's funny.”

Not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, politicians are literally being bought and paid for, on the other hand, at least they’re honest about it.

So many thoughts...

This is like my feelings toward Mexican government... at least they’re honest that they are corrupt and that it is a problem.

Our congress, on the other hand, is incapable of admitting wrongdoing/guilt... take the whole Pelosi/FBI thing.

No kidding!

I wonder if Newsday has written anything like this on the Democrats billionaire, George Soros, who hates this country and is trying to destroy it. And seems to be doing a damn good job of it!

Thomas Golisano

In August 2008, Golisano contributed $1 million to the Democratic National Convention

Time for a Third Party.

Good idea. Why don't you start one for disaffected Democrats?
Divide and conquer, I always say.

Thomas Golisano, who owns the Buffalo Sabres and is the CEO of Paychex, which is a payroll company, has a piece today in the New York Post: “I Love New York. But how much should it cost to call New York home? Decades of out-of-control budgets, spending hikes and relentless borrowing have made New York simply too expensive. Politicians like to talk about incentives — for businesses to relocate, for example, or to get folks to buy local. After reviewing the new budget, I have identified the most compelling incentive of all: a major tax break immediately available to all New Yorkers. To be eligible, you need do only one thing: move out of New York state.

Then he says this: “Last week I spent 90 minutes doing a couple of simple things — registering to vote, changing my driver’s license, filling out a domicile certificate and signing a homestead certificate — in Florida. Combined with spending 184 days a year outside New York, these simple procedures will save me over $5 million in New York taxes annually,” which is about $13,800 in taxes a day. And then he says, “By moving to Florida, I can spend that $5 million on worthy causes, like better hospitals, improving education or the Clinton Global Initiative. Or maybe I’ll continue to invest it in fighting the status quo in Albany. One thing’s certain: That money won’t continue to fund Albany’s bloated bureaucracy, corrupt politicians and regular special-interest handouts. How did the state get to this point? By spending, spending and spending some more.”

A billionaire leaves costly NY - what am I doing here? Rush left for the same reason. And NYC has a billionaire mayor and the only cutback he’s interested in is - fats!

Anyone knew a cheaper payroll processor for small firms? I want to dump Paychex. Golisano is an idiot and Paychex is expensive.
