AP Source: NKorea May Be Prepping New Nuclear Test

Published: June 11, 2009

WASHINGTON (AP) -- North Korea may be preparing for its third nuclear test, a show of defiance as the United Nations considers new sanctions on the dictatorship for conducting an underground nuclear explosion in May, according to a U.S. government official.

North Korea conducted an underground explosion on May 25, its first since a 2006 atomic test. The official, who spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity in order to discuss the unreleased information, would not provide details regarding the assessment.

A draft U.N. resolution proposed Wednesday would impose tough sanctions on North Korea's weapons exports and financial dealings and allow inspections of suspect cargo in ports and on the high seas. North Korea has threatened to retaliate if new sanctions are adopted.

North Korea already is a pariah to many countries and has been under tough economic sanctions for years. Last month's reported test defied a Security Council resolution adopted after the North's first underground atomic blast in October 2006.

The White House National Security Council would not comment on the assessment of a possible third nuclear test in the works.

What gets me is 0bama and the Left loves to preach about how they want to rid the world of nuclear weapons and had they just got out of the way Bush would have executed Reagan's plan to make them obsolete. The missile shield would have made them worthless and nobody, Iran, No. Korea, Pakistan, China, etc. would have the desire to make them or possess them, they would just be a big waste of money and would be sitting in museums next to ball and powder pistols.

On the one hand, this seems to demonstrate that the Bush-0bama approach to North Korea has been an abysmal failure.

On the other hand, if those stupid Norks keep ‘testing’ their weapons, they won’t have any left in their inventory.

“Ohhh Dear Leader! We gloriously report to you that all of our tests of the Great Nuclear Leap Forward Warheads have been enormously successful!”

“Velly good. Launch the next one at Tokyo.”

“uhhh Dear Leader? We don’t have any more.”

“?!?#?##*@)*#?!?”

Geez...normal response from the Obama team. Oh well, we can all just prepare for a nuclear winter and bury ourselves underground for a while...no problem... I am preparing for this event - you?

I think he will hold off that drastic measure until the next time. Obama is a cautious man and he doesn’t want to seem to gruff all at once.

Nothing to worry about. State Dept. took NK off the terrorism list. They’re a-ok now!

That is part of it. Tests aren't usually run for show; you're trying to solve a problem or determine a most efficient way of operating.

Except in this case, it's ALSO a show. It's a product demo. The better results they can demonstrate, the more buyers they will have line up for their wares.

Think of it like this. If you're a third world dictator, how much would you care that North Korea is researching nuclear weapons? Meh. What if they had working weapons? For sale? Did that get your interest?

For a long time, we cared about their research, and tried to bribe them out if it. If those bribes are no longer on the table, then they have to move to the next stage, which is to make money off of the weapons directly. They aren't making nukes to use on South Korea or blow up Seattle. They're making nukes to scare us off, and to make money. The North Korean leaders want to live, and they want to live a long time; fat, dumb, and happy. There's a LOT of money to be made being the world's nuclear weapons Wal Mart.

But first, you need prove you have a working product. Hence the tests.

Makes you wonder about the $137 billion in treasury bonds that were being smuggled in Italy.

maybe just a couple of words in all caps then and you’re right, more than two exclamtion point might be a little over the top, but it should still be a little terse.

But next time North Korea detonates a nuke.... Let the exclamation points fill the warning letters like children running akimbo.

I just love it when I can use the word akimbo.
