President Barack Obama’s hopes of halting Iran’s nuclear programme have been dealt a blow by the election result but the policy of the “outstretched hand” will continue.
“The Iran election seriously complicates Obama’s game plan in the region,” said Steven Clemons, of the New America Foundation, a left-of-centre Washington think tank. “But if Ahmadinejad is sworn in and the situation gets relatively stable, nothing at all has changed in the equation that Obama set out during the campaign: we have to deal with our enemies – we must engage.”
There had been high hopes of an “Obama effect” in Iran, similar to the victory for a pro-western coalition in Lebanese elections this month in which Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed “party of God”, was defeated.
Tehran drew a different lesson from Hezbollah’s defeat, according to Lawrence Korb, of the Center for American Progress, who was a foreign policy adviser to Obama during his election campaign. “The mullahs were afraid that if they went two-nil down, the United States and Europe would have taken a tougher line with them on the nuclear issue,” he said.

But egObama gave a speech in Cairo and it was supposed to make the lions lay down with the lambs. The Iranians were going to beat swords into plowshares. When egObama speaks, the world stops everything. The unicorns start prancing and the munchkins resume dancing. Blue Bell ice cream is served all around.
It is a sad day, in world wide journalism, when the drive by media, in their obvious complicity, call the shennanigans that have occured in the last two days in Iran elections.

This is the height of stupidity. The analyst assumes that the nut-job would cheat his own people, but the proper response is to “engage”.
Ahmadinejad’s re-election was an utter failure of 0bama’s foreign policy.
He owns the situation in Iran.
Had he not given his strident and naive Cairo speech, Ahmadinejad would have been ousted.

The only seismic shift that I noticed was China mocking and scolding Barry's reckless spending, Europe and the West moving rapidly to the right away from socialism, England's leftie PM taking a beating, N. Korea poking a nuclear ICBM in Barry's eye, and having to offer an exorbitant sum of money to a tiny island nation to take a couple of low-risk GITMO detainees.
Credit for the great Lebanon victory is surely due to the expert advise of Joe Biden and Barry's alienation of our staunchest western allies, coupled with Barry's dynamic oratory displayed during his global apology tour.
