To: Borges

This is just a verbal similitude. The common picture of those two excellent composers is as driven, tortured geniuses.

But there is a bottomless gulf between artists who are tortured by their need to express beauty, and the ‘artists’ who seek to express torture.

The point is that what was beautiful to them was often ugly to everyone else. One contemporary called a late Beethoven string quartet an ‘uncorrected horror’.
