Fashion world honors new stars Rodarte — and Obama

NEW YORK – The fashion industry made it clear at its annual awards ceremony Monday night that it's looking to future stars to see it past the doldrums of the recession, shunning longtime favorites and honoring a largely new guard: Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang — and Michelle Obama.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America's special tribute award went to the first lady, considered a new player in this world.

Noting her "meteoric rise as a fashion icon," CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg said Obama had "a unique look that balances the duality of her lives" in her roles as trusted adviser to her husband, President Barack Obama, and busy mother to their two daughters.

Although she was missing from the crowd at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Obama's presence was felt throughout the star-studded ceremony, which included Heidi Klum and Blake Lively, both wearing Michael Kors, and Bradley Cooper in a Calvin Klein suit.

It took host Tracey Ullman less than two minutes in her opening monologue to mention the new first lady of fashion. As complimentary as she was, though, Ullman, a Brit, did say Obama shouldn't have worn a cardigan to meet Queen Elizabeth II.

Obama accepted her award via a pre-taped video speech. Wearing a crisp white button-down shirt and two strands of pearls, she honored fashion as an American "art form" with "ingenuity and craftsmanship that contribute so much to our economy and culture."

“Naomi Campbell is an icon?”

Well, she’s been a professional model since age 15, and a Vogue cover girl for 20 consecutive years.

You know, Michelle is not an ugly woman... Nor is she beautiful. She is common. Common like peanut butter sandwiches, or common like an elm tree. Nothing exotic or beautiful about her. Just common. You can see her on any subway, any airplane, any library or grocery store... Common. Only politically charged mis-aspirations could possible label her as beautiful or exotic.

I agree, she just looks like somebody’s mom. She can actually look very nice and appropriate sometimes. There’s just so often something not-quite-right. Odd color, wrong accessories (THAT BOOB BELT!!), weird combinations of patterns and textures.

I kind of agree with you...Michelle is not that bad looking. Some of the outfits shown are actually quite nice on her..

You are right in that the same people who think Barbara Bush is beautiful and think that Michelle is ugly is due to their political affiliation. Pulling away and not thinking in terms of politics...Laura Bush is beautiful; however, I’m sure at DU, there were daily comments about how ugly she was in their eyes...simply because she was married to a Republican President.

Now as to political standings, Michelle is ugly as get out....

Sorry, but I never thought that Laura Bush was beautiful. I thought she was fine. Beautiful? No. I know a beautiful woman when I see her. I can’t think of any politician that fits the bill. Sarah Palin used to be but hey, she’s no spring chicken any more. Beautiful women make me dizzy and my tongue hangs out until I remember that at my age I just need to say “hi” and talk about my career and I’m “in”.

We are absolutely living in an “Emperor’s New Clothes” world. This is just one example. The swallowing hook, line and sinker of Obama’s excuses for associating with Jeremiah Wright and William Ayers is another.
Gay “marriage” is another, and the whole business of a bunch of activists taking homosexuality off the DSMIV list of disorders, thereby declaring an obvious dysfunction “normal.”

The inmates are taking over the asylum.

so at your ‘age’ you have the audacity to say the Sarah Palin at age 44 isn’t beautiful? I am sure I am not the only one offended and astounded by that.

So beauty to you corresponds with age? Your ‘lust’ blinds you.

She is not a fashion icon. She has a habit of looking like her closet threw-up on her.

But, a lie repeated often enough becomes the truth...um, hey, didn’t Goebbels used to say that??

What a coinkydink.
