Incorrect. You've been poorly catechized and are still obliged to abstain from eating meat on Fridays unless your Bishop has deemed otherwise.

Can. 1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Actually, I thought the US Bishops conference obtained permission from Rome to allow all Americans to substitute some other charitable work or sacrifice.

Catholic, grade school, high school and college and I never heard differently until now. I'm surprised.
