Senate Passes "Cash for Clunkers" Program

Congress approved a "cash for clunkers" program Thursday to provide government incentives of $3,500 to $4,500 to motorists who trade in their gas guzzlers for more fuel efficient vehicles after Senate Democrats narrowly defeated a Republican effort to kill the plan. Auto state senators said the program would help hard-pressed car dealers and automakers by bringing buyers into showrooms, and they got help from President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, who made calls to wavering Democrats urging them to keep the plan alive. "This is an emergency for families and small businesses -- for an industry that has been the backbone of our economy for a generation," said Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., who sponsored the proposal. Opponents said it would increase the federal debt without doing much to get expensive-to-operate vehicles off the roads.

Why are people going to do this when they have no job and are in debt up to their eyeballs?.....

GM (Government Motors) has the power of tax dollars behind it now!

They can offer 3,000, 4,000, 10,000 or 20,000 dollars to trade in on a ‘green’ car.

And the competition will not be able to match that, so they will go out of business- WORLD WIDE!

Obama didn’t have to nationalize ALL the auto companies, only ONE.

Its a pretty absurd program.

What’s next, will the government start buying people’s homes and ripping them down- so they can go out and buy a new home and help the construction industry?

Its a plain and simple make work program

So the government is going to give car dealers $3,500 to $4,500 for every reliable car built in the ‘90s or earlys 00s that would probably have no trade value otherwise? How deep is this jerk going to dig into our children and grandchildren’s pockets?

I wish one of these lawmakers would come up with a flow chart to explain how this is supposed to work - take over the car companies, fire the execs, close down dealerships, pay people to buy cars...does this make sense even to them?

And here’s this yahoo Stabenow - good grief.

I don't know of anyone who is driving around in a 15 or 20 year old clunker who will or can rush out and buy a new car, even with the help of this plan.

If I heard correctly the car has to be pre-1990 model and have more than the specified mileage.

The people who come up with, push and pass these plans are clueless, absolutely clueless. They are completely out of touch with life in the real world. Too bad there's not some way to force them out of their cocoon and into my world, where I have to worry about the cost of EVERYTHING I buy.

I have a paid for gas suzzling clunker as well. However, I would be willing to sell it for, say, $2000 to anyone who wants to use it for a $4000 trade-in. Freepmail me if interested.

This isn't quite as good as ObaMao giving me a car and filling it with gas, but I suppose it is the best I can do.

And also, I’m NEVER going to let them shred or crush my ‘99 Wrangler. I’m too afraid I’ll never be able to get another vehicle that has enough horsepower to tow and go off-road with the new emissions standards.
